I think the primary complaint was that the blue puffs were a bit too cute and benign, wheras the original firey orbs were a lot more arcane and intruiging. In the context of the story, they represented rebellion and a primal need for freedom, which the latter portrayed better.
The main reasons for the original change was that 1) they were hard to see in a game that's 40% orange and 2) it wasn't clear to new players that sending hapless slaves through a sinister, buzzing ring of flames was desirable. While I'd still rather the original design was just extended into a full circle with six or so orbs rather than two, I appreciate that gameplay needs to take priority, and I'm glad that JAW managed to find a good compromise between the two extremes; neither suspiciously dangerous, nor incongruously pure.
So yeah. A sage nod and a thumbs up from me.
