By "stuff" I meant mechanics. It's a bit like playing Civillisation in real-time; you have to think about trade routes, territory claims, city planning, stuff like that.

This is a nice way of saying that Rise of Nations is really fucking confusing.

So you're only applying what you play to what you'd recommend to anyone else, even if it there's a chance that RTS just isn't their thing?
How can I recommend what I haven't played? They're my favourite games so I recommended them.

I suppose I could expand though:

Fallout, specifically Fallout I, is probably my favourite game other than Abe's Oddysee. The atmosphere is absolutely spot on, the world feels desolate and inhospitable but at the same time the basis for the whole story is hope and how you can overcome adversity. It's cliche as fuck but on top of that the world is designed perfectly. The dialogue is pretty good and the trees are fairly advanced. The game relies on story over graphics and I do love all the organisations.

No point in explaining why I like Abe's Oddysee but yeah, AoE II is bliss, there's something cathartic about building up an enormous civilisation and curb stomping someone elses hard work. The games can run on for three or four hours too which is awesome.

DoW...that's just amazing. I love the whole series but for me the game is balanced perfectly, especially the first one...I'll probably write up more if prompted, right now I'm gonna go eat dinner.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha hahahahahahaha

Dawn of War is amazing, but it's balanced awfully. That's part of the charm.

I've never had a problem with balancing issues on the core DoW. I'm not talking about the additions. Fuck playing necrons on a 1v1 against...pretty much anyone else.

That's weird. I always considered Necrons to be overpowered.

Sadly, I have played almost none of the "best games of all time" (SotC, LoZ, Half-Life...)
So here are some I remember really fondly.
4. Ratchet & Clank 3.

Every little detail, every collectible, and all the things you can destroy led to the most satisfying experience I've had in a game.
3. Rayman Legends.

I will never get bored of this game. Rayman 3 isn't far behind.
2. Psychonauts.

So funny and memorable only game where I remember every character and every level.
Also, the only game I'm listing that I would call art.
1. Day of the Tentacle.

I dunno. It makes me laugh. I still have to finish Grim Fandango, but I may end up liking it more.

It's not as funny as DotT, but it is absolutely brilliant from a storytelling standpoint. There's an HD version coming out soon, so you can finish it then.

I've spent more hours on RTS games than all other genres combined, but I won't add any to my list. I don't think it's the games themselves which are so brilliant but the community and the competition which aren't things a casual player can just immerse themselves into.

So, in chronological order:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Half Life 2 (including the episodes, if that's not cheating)

Those four games I have very fond memories of playing through.

SWKotOR is fantastic, I wouldn't be opposed to it replacing Persona 3 on my list, they both were enjoyable for the same fundamental reason to me.

2. Civilization 5
3. Jet Set Radio
4. Resident Evil 4

I can't imagine playing MI1 without those charming pixel graphics, especially in the dialogue scenes with Elaine and Carla. Their facial expressions were perfect.

The former has certainly aged way waaaaaay more gracefully, but you'd have more genre variety with the latter.

If I didn't have RE4 I'd have RE2, so I'd say go with that one.
