All video game contracts have a "duration". If nothing else, the publishing rights revert back to the third-party developer after a good number of years.

Bear in mind that Munch's Oddysee was an Xbox Exclusive. Technically its contract had a duration, that being the amount of time until the rights reverted back to OWI. It took a decade to actually appear on another platform.

My point being... saying that the contract has a "duration" doesn't mean you'll be seeing the game on another platform any time soon. Or ever.

"I have Tomb Raider shipping next holiday exclusively on Xbox," Xbox head Phil Spencer told Eurogamer, possibly while salivating. "It is Xbox 360 and Xbox One. I'm not trying to fake anybody out in terms of where this thing is. What they do with the franchise in the long run is not mine. I don't control it." Eurogamer do not mention if, at this point, Spencer's eyes narrowed, as if daring the universe not to bend to his will. "So all I can talk about is the deal I have. I don't know where else Tomb Raider goes."

That last statement came after many preceding statements, including lines like, "My job is not to talk about games I don't own", "I didn't buy the IP. I didn't buy the studio. It's not mine", and "I don't own them building Tomb Raider on other platforms."

All of which finally led Spencer to this: "Yes, the deal has a duration. I didn't buy it. I don't own the franchise."

Spencer finished by not revealing how long the exclusivity deal's duration will last.

It also just shows me that the Crystal Dynamics obviously doesn't give a **** about their fans on the other platforms and are willing to go ahead with this deal, which CLEARLY will make the game less popular and fewer sold. I guess Microsoft must of given them the deal of a lifetime to agree to something obviously stupid as that.
Exactly, it's ridiculous for a Sony based franchise to suddenly end up on a rival's system as an exclusive. It almost killed off Oddworld and Nintendo can get away with it since their games are mostly developed in-house and are highly unlikely to be on other systems in the first place. For a multiplatform game to become exclusively on one platform though (and not the most selling console) it does smell very fishy indeed and the reasons the company give out are just complete and utter BS to the highest degree.

Sorry to disabuse you guys of your rabid fanboy delusions, but no Tomb Raider game has ever been a Sony exclusive.

You can make the argument that several games in the series were Sony console exclusives, but...

:
I have the first tomb raider on sega saturn. That's about it though, the new one didn't really interest me too much.
first one certainly wasn't. Neither was the fourth, which I had on Dreamcast.

This really is a very stupid thing to get so angry about.

I wouldn't say it's stupid, Wings. If Tomb Raider is someone's favourite series, when before it had been multiplatform (and the game this TR is a sequel to was multiplatform), it only makes sense that they'd get miffed when it's announced that the game is now an exclusive on a console they do not own. A console which is rather pricey.

It’s reasonable to get upset that a game is going to be limited to a single platform. It’s stupid to claim that the series has always been exclusive to another platform as an argument against it, especially when it isn’t even true.

Tomb Raider was never sony-exclusive, but rather multi-platform. And it suddenly changed. That's the thing I'm angry about. It seems it's coming to other platforms now, but I'm still angry at Crystal.

Honestly though, everyone associates Tomb Raider with Sony. Lara Croft is an unofficial mascot and she undoubtedly found most of her fame on Sony platforms.

The Tomb Raider games were as prominent on the PC as the PlayStation, if not more. A few of them even got PC-exclusive expansion packs. I don't know where the "Sony exclusive" stuff is coming from.

I honestly find it baffling that some people associate the franchise more with PC than Sony platforms. It certainly was a Playstation exclusive, but Tomb Raider was one of the pioneering games on the PS1. It's just one of those games everyone had on the Playstation at some point, whether you were shit or amazing. Yes, they of course had a good response on the PC with the expansion packs Jordan is referring to being released, but I definitely think Lara Croft is a quintessentially Playstation-esque character.

I actually associate Tomb Raider with PC as well. We used to play it all the time on the computer despite the fact we also owned them on PS1
