Meat Grinders in NnT

Has anyone found a way to reliably get through the fast-moving grinders in NnT? I'm yet to be able to work out visually what position the grinders should be in when I start moving, and it seems like they get Abe even if he's vaguely in the vicinity.

My most successful technique so far has been to have one finger on the quickload button, one finger on the left/right arrow, shut my eyes, and then roll at some random time.

The best fix I found was to load up Abe's Oddysee.

You have to utter 'speed run' five times into a mirror and he'll appear.

I usually found that the trick is to start rolling slightly earlier than what feels right. It’s like with the UXB timers, the timing is quicker than it feels it should be, so you gotta compensate for it.

Pretty much what Manco said. The timings are all wrong for the saws and the UXB. I hope it's something they get right in AE HD.

It's the old mindset we have from AO that fucks us over. Rolling is actually slower than running now and both running and rolling have a lead-in time until you're at full speed. All things to keep in mind when dealing with drills. Sitting right next to one and rolling under them is something that fails (by design) 99% of the time.

I've tried this, but I always seem to go too early.

I genuinely don't know how anyone speedruns this games, especially given how inconsistent Slig and Slog behaviour is when you're running past them.

No, Nate is asking 'Teach me to perform a manual skill that must exist if other people are executing it successfully".

I have an urge. A mighty. Mighty. Urge.

I always had a little more luck starting a bit behind. Like in AO, I got to the gridsquare right next to the grinder, and in N'n'T I start back at what would be 2 gridsquares and iirc I start rolling while the grinder is down.

I finished the main game a while back. I started playing Alf's Escape on the day I created this thread, got annoyed, and haven't had the time to get back to it yet.

I dont have a general strategy for them. I just know by memory when I have to kinda go. The only one that is so frame perfect it may as well be luck is the one in the paramonia temple secret level.

slig and slog behaviour actually is pretty consistent, as long as you're doing EXACTLY the same movement each time.

I thought their ridiculous speed was due to a frame-rate bug that was patched? Well fuck. Guess I won't be replaying NnT anytime soon then.

Yeah, that's what I thought too. In fact, I actually remember playing it a few months back under the impression that they were patched and noticed that they were, in fact, slightly easier to roll under. Unless...it was just my imagination.

The grinders get me a lot in my any% speedrun attempts. On the PC version, I tick the V-sync option to lock the games frame rate down to 60fps and I can usually get passed them pretty quickly as soon as grinder starts going up as soon as it goes down. I did a run a few days ago and got 20:16 in-game time and I managed to get passed both grinders without a quickload!

Edit: You might want to have a look at my any% boardroom speedrun that completes the level in 0:59 in realtime.
