OWF in Isolation?

I just have to say I really detest how most members on these forums react to new comers. A lot of people come here as Oddworld had a huge impact on their lives, with no new games to play they eventually find themselves here.
I myself joined OWF a year and a half ago, but I was flamed very harshly for god knows what so I gave up on OWF. About three months ago I came back out of my unshakable love for Oddworld and joined W@RF v. 6

Sense my return to these forums I've seen new comers come to these forums with their same love of Oddworld and be completely flamed for their honest questions. Some post in the wrong places, some double post not knowing where the edit button is, and many don't have the best grammar.
Rather then help out, many OWF members(mostly older ones) flame these new members for their tiny mistakes. Surely this isn't how to treat new members, shouldn't the Oddworld community help out one another?

I'm just saying I find most members reactions to new comers to be too harsh, shouldn't they have more leeway for their mistakes?

Stay Odd.

I have to agree. Apparently, not too many people share the brother and sister love with each other like they should. I too have my fair share of mistakes with newcomers. What I think is the problem is that OWF members are use to each other following the rules, (although I am bugged how some old members always get away for their rule breaking) and when a new one forgets, they don't expect them to get any better. So they bash them to get them to remember.

I'm with Venks all the way. Let's treat new members nicely, and not scare a potential out of their minds.

If they can't find the fucking edit button, they deserve to be flamed. If they post a an Oddworld thread in forum suggestions and help, they deserve to be flamed. Ignorance is not an excuse.

I only flame once they have repeatedly done something wrong, even after I have told them the solution. Either that, or they just annoy me.

Then they deserve it.

If the newcomers deserve it, fine. And most of the time they do, to be honest. I don't even remember seeing someone flamed for something they didn't deserve to be flamed for.
/long confusing sentence
In case they do, however, people on this forum would have lost their wits entirely. Do you have any idea how rare it is to find a real Oddworld fan that is willing to stay here and contribute? Because there are no more new games, there's no regular 'flow' of newbies, and we must hold together best we can.
I hope this will not happen though.

I have to agree, and must admit that in the past I may/probably have been guilty of this, can't remember though. People make mistakes when they're new, so should be guided.

Having said that, I don't tolerate the ones who are too lazy to bother correcting their mistakes.

Hm... I'm not against Newcomers, especially if they love Oddworld. Admitedly, we are a little harsh on those who make mistakes in their first week or so here though.

Basic stance on subject: New guys are fine. N00bs suck, but Newbs are cool. Rock on New People!

I just don't like when it takes them time to learn, but hey there are those guys everywhere out there...

God help us so that we don't get more n00000000bz like Matthew9r!

I am annoyed too at all the "oMg, n00b!!1" shit that goes on around. Flaming used to be about something. Well, I'm a hypocrite for saying that. I was probably the worst when it came to flaming newcomers, but times have changed.

If people can't be bothered to talk properly, when they know full well how to, they deserve everything they get thrown at them. Most of the people post about 10 times and leave. It's like they aren't even bothered.
I say hello and welcome to newcomers, and if they're contributing well, I'm nice to them. But when they constantly bug me, I snap. I don't feel mean at all, and when they apologise, I say sorry back. It's fair.
When you've been on this forum long enough, you realise.

*cough* Ontopic... I'm a newcomer, and I've never really been flamed for anything (probably because I took absolute extra care to not appear like one of them n00bs) but I do find it rather annoying when people talk in 'chatspeak' or 'txt type' and the like. It's just so much easier to read when they post with good, clear grammar and spelling. The occasional spelling error usually isn't even noticed, and as long as you can understand what they're saying, grammar isn't hard either. That's why it annoys me when people repeatedly 'TYEP LIEK DIS' when they're fully capable of typing normally.

And Chat speak is annoying... But I haven't really seen too many of that around the forums lately. That might be due to the fact that I'm not here all the time but...

In my experience over the last few months, it is actually the more recent members who are strongly attacking incoherent newcomers. New members deserve a degree of lenience so that they can come to understand the way online discussion in general and OWF in particular function. However, it needs to be said that some of the newest members are some of the worst, most rabid, and slow‐witted I’ve ever had the pleasure to help out. Any assimilation of them into our ways is a real testiment to the patience and helpfulness of some of us.

That said, I will come down on unwarranted newb‐abuse like an elephant.

I agree with Venks on this one. Being as gone as long as I had, I must have forgotten what the forums was like, because I don't seem to remember the blatant rudeness I see now. It seems to me that intolerance is the "in" thing here. There was even a point in time where I began to reconsider my returning here.

Fix'd.

I'm not surprised, considering we've had nothing but mainly n00bs pretty much for months. Seriously. I haven't seen a really smart newcomer. When I first joined a forum (liek, first time evar), I didn't post threads in the wrong places, or loads of pointless ones, and had grammar as good as this. I don't understand why other people can't. Considering I have a mental condition, for crying out loud...it's hardly anything, but still...

Looking back, some posts were a bit n00bish there, but I'm not like that now, and it's hardly the moronicity of some people here.

"Why are Glukkons brown?" Sounds liek n00b to meh.

I mean, Alex2405 is still spamming and so on, and he's been here a fair while and been told enough by me alone, seldom everyone else, not to.
