So 9/11 today....

Yup, certainly is that day. I remember what I was doing when it happened, really didn't understand it at the time. I really treat this day like any other day, I dont know anyone from the attacks.

I made this topic to get some opinions and stories. Maybe its because I didnt have a facebook last year, but Im seeing a lot of ignorance and lack of maturity about the even on that, and am a little surprised by both.

What's the latest on the situation with the pseudo-terrorist pastor?

So, if Pastor Terry Jones uses the threat of burning Qur'ans to force the Imam to move the New York Mosque, doesn't that make Jones a terrorist?

Heinous book abuse. It isn't exactly a crime, so long as the books are your own.

It's still terrorism.

It's legal terrorism and he has the right to do it, but it's still terrorism.

He fits the definiton.

He's aware of the wider consequences his actions may have and he's using that to coerce the Iman.

Frankly, when there are threats of violence against something as trivial as destroying your own private property, you have the duty to go ahead in protest. Your freedoms cannot be held hostage, and others should not step down, interfere, or otherwise enable that hostage taking. That only proves that violence and the threats of violence work. It's the same reason we don't negotiate with (actual) terrorists and kidnappers: doing so turns such crimes into a profitable business model.

As it happens, I would not burn a book, burning is far too symbolic, too much like special treatment, which ridiculous religious reverence does not merit. Tossing it in a bin, followed by your dinner leftovers, that is far more apt. I would join it with any number of other religious texts, and indeed atheist books, just to reinforce the point that holding these items sacred is ridiculous. And when even that elicits a disproportional response? The lesson is that mobs of people will react with irrational freakish hysteria to the idea that other people don't believe as they do. But it is not my responsibility to tip-toe around, watching what I say or do and generally baby-sitting their feelings so to prevent them from being offended.

The problem isn't the desecrators. The problem is the people who have an unwarranted sense of privilege, that their beliefs will not be questioned or criticized, ever, by anyone. And when they are, the offended party is free to confirm to an awesome degree just how mad their beliefs are, with prolonged and excessive outrage. Or not. It is entirely up to them.

It's just a fucking book.

No, the problem is very most definitely that he and others are prepared to put the relationship between American and the middle east at hostage just to keep a mosque from being built.

This is the immediate problem, we can focus on the other problems after the event.

I've never really understood the whole 9/11 thing and by that; I mean I can't understand how people are so ignorant and intolerant towards eachother. The more I think about the whole thing; the more ridiculous I think the whole thing was and it still is, frankly...Terry Jones wanting to burn the Qur'an just shows hes as ignorant as the terrorists (I refuse to refer them to as Muslims; because frankly, their not the same in my eyes) that want to force us to believe what they believe.

(I refuse to refer them to as Muslims; because frankly, their not the same in my eyes)
While they are clearly not the same as those who do not want to kill everybody, it does no good to deny that they were Muslims. They were. Mohammed Atta and the others (as well as the growing number of Islamist killers and plotters native to the west) represent a real and burgeoning development within Islam, an actualization of one of Islam's possibilities, an indigenous transnational movement of apocalyptic violence that has brought misery to Muslim societies, and to us, and it is not Islamophobic to say so. Quite the contrary: it is to side with Muslims who are struggling against the same poison as we are.

Apologetic definitions of Islam will not avail anybody in this struggle. Like Christianity and Judaism, Islam is a religion of peace and of war, most if not all religions have these tendencies and potentials within them. In 2001, America was not attacked by Islam. Or Jainism, or Seventh-Day Adventism. But it was attack by a handful of Muslims.

I was in Middle School, I was showing up late to class as usual and was dreading going into home room and getting lectured for being late again. I was getting my shit out of my locker and I overheard two teachers discussing the event, later on during my math class my teacher came in to the room crying and telling us what happened, I was scared and also very pissed off.

I was in an RE lesson in the first year of secondary school, our teacher told us what had happened and gave us an ad lib lecture on religious tolerence and the importance of understanding that the actions of these terrorists were not indicative of the feelings of the entire Islamic nations.

I had just gotten out of bed and was pissed that Digimon was not on and that there was some boring building-fire shit on TV.

I was in fifth grade and on my way to math class and then I saw it on TV. Later, I remember selfishly using it as an excuse to go home and play computer games.

I do vididly remember Tom Brokaw losing it slightly and repeating "watch this tape" as they showed another flawless video at a perfect perspective of one of the towers collapsing.

On the topic of Islam, I think the Islamic community center is a great opportunity for the US to show its open mind and appreciation of religious freedom by letting it be constructed with a positive attitude. Except the two are quickly being diminished in this country.

same here.
i was a shitty six year old back then....
anyway back on topic, u can never accuse a whole religion of terrorism because some terrorists were of that religion, the whole stereotype thingie is plain bullshit, i mean just because 1 or 2 guys say from spain were murders, doesn't mean that in spain when someone shouts in ur face it gives u the right to gut out his heart or something.
stereotypes are the real stupidity here.

I once saw a comment on Youtube saying:

"Not all muslims are terrorists, it's just most terrorists are muslims."

Now that's a shitty comment. And racist too. People get the idea of muslims being terrorists because of 9/11. It's just ignorant.

I don't recall many non-islamic terrorists blowing themselves up in the past 10 years, and there have been quite a few or attempts since 9/11.

First terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993: Islamic Terrorists
Train bombing in Spain: Islamic terrorists
Shoe bomber in London: Islamic terrorists
Bus bomber in London: Islamic terrorists
Recent makeshift bomb on a flight to Detroit: Islamic terrorist
Constant violence in the middle east, Isreal, all Islamic terrorists
What about all the soldiers who died at the hands of Al-qaida?

Yeah, Islam has just as many terrorists as any other religion. I can see that now, thank you for opening my eyes.

I like how terrorists in Africa, South America and East Asia don't exist according to you.

Just terrorists that attack western societies hmmm...

That's where the keyword 'most' comes in, now doesn't it? Besides there are a lot of African terrorists who act in the name of Islam. And I believe there are more rebels than terrorists in the other two areas. If people would be blowing themselves up in the middle of a busy mall in South America or East Asia every week I'm pretty sure we'd hear more about it.

Pretty sure the word terrorist isn't defined by how far you are personally willing to stake your life on your cause.
