hmm, certainly does your head in after a while. But, its simple change, which is good. People sometimes get overly confused...I dunno, you seem to have enough, a join date, stars, posts...but, maybe once you have exceded a certain post count, the stars change colour? Not just for mods, but mega posters...hmm, lotsa options

Haha, my rep power is greater than Alc’s.
I originally had Administrators set to a static reputation power, but in doing so, it would never climb or drop as certain 'goals' were achieved. If you look at Xavier, his reputation power is 20. This is because for every 1,000 posts you gain an extra point of rep power (therefore Xavier has 13 rep points based on posts alone). I'll attach what the settings are at the bottom of this post to better explain.

:
That would be my guess. Is there any way to delete the rep you give a post? I gave negative rep to Cream, who is new, mostly just to test how rep works, and his rep plummeted.

Also, could someone with the power split this thread so we have one dedicated to reputation, and another dedicated to stars? I think it would b appropriate now that rep has actually been activated.
You can't delete the reputation yourself - but I've done it for you through the AdminCP. And I'll get right on that - splitting the thread, that is.

So, if I've got this correct, if I add or take away rep from someone, they'll change by 11 points? Can't you add more power based on a member's position in the mod heirarchy?

Also, where can we see our reputation? I can only see the power.

If it is positive reputation, it will add 11 rep points to someone. However, if it is negative reputation then the rep power is halved and floor'ed before it is subtracted from someone. In this instance it'd work out to be: floor(-11/2) = -5.

As for adding more power based on heriarchy, I'll look into that when I get home. I might be able to whip up a hook, because if we use the built-in option, our rep power would not increase as we reach certain milestones (it would remain static).

Wait, it says the defualt is 10, so shouldn't we all be raised to that as a starting point? or is that points?
*edit* Ok, I get it now,, it is points, and you can give each other points.
Which makes me think, which 24 hour clock are we running by (For the amount you can give to be reset), and what if users mistreat this (IE, two users give each other points daily)

That is something we have to trust all the users on considering giving each other points daily I guess.

This is strange. Suddenly I'm all excited I got a 'Nice Idea' on my rep box on my suggestion for the star system. This thing is slowly influencing me to make posts that will win me rep points.

This thing is making me get into touch with the side of me that gets happy over what other people think of me.

Destroy it.

Nah, not really. I'm likin' it.

P.S. 6 points away from being tied with Alcar, teehee

An evidently overly-complex idea that is just going to inspire people to counter-attack and go on charm offensives in attempts for the world to know how popular they are.

Sounds good to me.

So how exactly does it work? Why have I started on 0, when users who have left the forums have more points than me? Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining, just curious.
And since I have 0 points, none of my rep points I give to others count right?

You can't give rep until you get over 50 forum posts and 10 reputation points. Everyone starts on ten, as far as I can tell.

Mudling, your rep power is zero, but your actual rep is 6. Hold you mouse over the green block in your postbit or right click on it and view its properties to see this figure. You started off with ten just like everyone else, but som negative rep took you down four points. Shouldn’t have dropped that firework in the crowd.

so how come it says zero and not 6? is it a fault or is this rep thing more complicated?

Rep power is rep you can give.

Reputation (The number when you hover your mouse over yon green box) is rep EARNED.

These two as far as I can gather work parallel to each other so if someone with 6 rep power gives you rep you get six rep. It's actually quite simple once you get your head round the initial strangeness. New ideas ftw. (Note I am not saying this JUST because I somehow have 17 rep today.....well maybe.)

A general feeling of mistrust about people or events and I wouldn't chit chat any more in this particular thread otherwise Alcar may hang us up by our balls for spamming.

Teaching through example that was cynicism. For your homework I want you to go home and think about what dicks the government are.

Hey, I have what I feel to be a very important question about how we give and take reputation. I’ve been looking at some of the comments made on people’s posts (take exception to this invasion of your privacy if you like, but I explained when it was first activated that the reputation system worried me, and I wanted to see roughly how it was bein used) and I’ve noticed that plenty of rep is given or taken on the grounds of ‘I agree’, ‘I disagree’, or ‘You shouldn’t do things like that in RL’.

But it was my impression reputation was meant to guage a user’s contribution to the Forums in various terms, so I’ve been reserving positive rep for well thought out analyses, explanations made for other users, and good ideas, and negative rep for careless, hurried posts, and borderline spam.

So are we using reputation to judge members by their behaviour on the Forums, or by how much we like them as people?

I would have thought both, based on their posts and behavior. I don't really think "I agree" or "I disagree" should play a big part in giving rep.

Max, that's a realy good point, my rep was effected by both ways, quite interesting.
I've been trying to use my power to encourage good posts, but at the time I had no power so it didn't matter, sure I was going to be naughty with the points once.
And please do look at our rep points if you can Max, someone moderating them would be realy good if you had the time.

I suddenly see the floor to this reputation thing. I'm now an unkown quantity because Hobo thinks I'm silly. I mean, Hobo can think what he likes but that doesn't mean that suddenly no-one knows who I am. Can anyone here truthfully tell me that they have never seen me around the forum before?

Well I hardly see you either so that's down to me not being interested in important stuff and you not noticing underlings. The last time I saw a post by you was just then, when I caught up on this thread before posting, and back when I was a noob that never stopped asking questions.

I know you as little as you know me so going by that logic your rep is just as low to me as mine is to you (beside knowing you as the divine admin) so you don't count.

My point is that I'm being portrayed as someone who nobody knows because someone thinks I did something wrong... If I was top spam all over the place then the rep thing would show me as someone barely noticed when quite clearly a spammer is soo irritating you don't forget them...
Does anyone see my point?
