Review for PSP port of "Abe's Oddssey"

Ok so I downloaded it to my PSP.

Ok guys, I'm editing my post. The laugh gamespeak (L2 + square) is there, its just not very loud so I didn't hear it (I guess because I had other music going on, but its definitely there and is also there when you kill a slig or fart).

As I said before, the controls can be a bit unwieldy if you choose any of the pre-set controls. However you can customize them and they work really well. You can choose the shoulder buttons and use the D pad to move, its a little ackward but you get used to it. You can press the right R button to sneak (Plus directional button), or the L button plus d pad button to run. You can run and jump easily this way, works great.

Now you can press L + R together to chat, *or* you can simply press up on the analog nub. And as AlexFili said, all the gamespeak you cannot do while moving so it makes sense to use the analog nub for this. Simply press right on the analog nub and press one of the buttons to use the one set of game speak, and I believe you press left on the nub Plus button for the other set of game speak.

If you press the Playstation button logo on your PSP system, that normally takes you home, up pops an options screen. You can choose to read the manuel for each game (Handy and you should read it, its helpful and very funny!), adjust the brightness of the screen, you can even import saved games somehow. Also you can adjust the screen size. The original is too small, the custom is better, and even the full screen is a little pixelated but surpisingly still looks great. The only problem with the full screen is part of the text bar at the top of screen (where it shows how to play) gets cut off. It still looks great. But I like the second setting the best.

This game is a direct port but its a great value at $9.99.

There are no tropies or extra frills from what I've seen. Since AO is the original game I hope in the port that you get in the 'best ending' (save all 100 mukodons) you get those extra in game movies. I asked OI about this and waiting a response.

Quick Save in AO? Eh, I wouldn't use it, AO is supposed to be hard.

I just read through the software manuel that came with the game. I don't think its quick save, but its a save feature. Apparently it takes you back to where you started when you quit, but not always at the same location. So it doesn't have quick save.

As far as I know same as the Playstation one had.

Just been a long time since I've played it.

As a side note, I'm still trying to figure out how to make abe laugh in the game...he just motions but doesn't do anything. Is this how it always was?

the laugh works in the tutorial on gamespeak though before you start the game.

Running is a pain on both controls, you have to press the analog nub left AND press the directional pad left or right at the same time.

Doesn't sound too good, but at least they got it officially on PSP. Does anyone know how the controls are for the non-official port that has been out for more then a year now?

I just looked through the controls again, there is an extra type 4 control set which the controls are better, and there's even a custom one you can customize yourself.

To sneak on the type 4 one you press the analog nub left or right and press the right arrow on the D pad. So to sneak left you would press right on the D pad and left on the nub.

I'm still trying to figure out how to customize it so this will be easier.

I also noticed when you blow up a slig on the original (at least from what I remember) he kind of laughs with a "heh heh hmm", doesn't happen on the port to the PSP. Xavier, do you remember how the laugh gamespeak worked for the original PS? maybe someone more knowledgeable than me can chime in, after all, I played the original PS verison a long time ago. Maybe they are the same with the gamespeak, maybe not. But like I said whenever I try to laugh he throws his arms up but no sound comes out. Thankfully I don't think that one gamespeak is critical to the gameplay.

And it's still a fun game, I don't regret buying them for on the Go.

I would also like to add, anyone else who owns the PSP port give their opinion? Anyone think of any good customized controls I can use that work better than the pre-set one? Custom controls confuses me. I wonder if any major game sites will re-review the PSone classic.

I played Abe's Oddysee and Abe's Exoddus on the PSP. The control setup I use is as follows;

L=R1
R=R2

(this means you can hold L/R and move without any problems)

Analog Nub Left = L1
Analog Nub Right = L2

Now, while this may seem totally crazy at first, I'll explain why it isn't.
Firstly, it's the only logical place to put the keys when all the other spots are taken.
Secondly, you do not move and talk at the same time. Hence, you'll have plenty of time to press the Nub and one of the PS1 buttons to speak. As for Chanting, you can either program Up on the Nub to be L1+L2, or hold the L and R buttons (I think?).

I'll admit it takes a bit of getting used to, but now I'm pretty much a pro with this method. I saved 100% of mudokons using these control methods, so it doesn't hamper you in any way.

Thanks, that control scheme works perfect. What controls do you use for exodus for the game speak (Aren't there more gamespeak words to use, same deal use the analog nub?)

Also, I was wrong about the L2 + Square abe's (laugh) and after he kills a slig. It was a user error on my part, I guess what happened was I had other music going on and just didn't hear it. Now I hear him laugh when I press L2 + square or when I fart (lol), or after I kill a slug exactly as i remember it.

Also since you can customize the controls that is a real plus, the control scheme you planned out actually works really well.

Thank you

Ignore all my negative comments, buy this game! (Odds are if you are registered on this site you already have it...but still, fun game!)

In Exoddus they just removed the two whistles and mudokon laughing (as a command). Replacing them with; Sorry, Work and All of Ya

My controls make the game easy for me. To Run on PSX was R1. I made it R on PSP. To Sneak was R2 on PSX. I made it L. Right nub on analog stick is L2 and left nub on analog stick is L1 and up nub is L1 and R1(still lets you chant.) I did this for both games and it works fine.

EDIT: Sorry for it seeming like I copied AlexFili's post. I didn't manage to read it before I posted.

I just updated the post. As I saw in another thread, there are no trophies to speak of. I sent OI a letter asking if the original in game movies you could access if you got a perfect game on AO is there, it should be. What's great about (at least the PSP verison) you can blow the game up to full screen (to where the game fills the screen of the PSP) and it still looks surprisingly good.
