Instead of having lots of short-lived threads about individual films or telly shows, I thought I'd start a blanket coverage, all-rounder of a thread. So, if there's a DVD you've just seen, cinema, TV, illegal download, whatever - just post here.

Psychoville ended recently. Apparently there won't be another series. And it was all going so well (until they resurrected the Nazi head and destroyed the realism).

The old version of War of the Worlds. Christ almighty, it was bad. The aliens looked fucking ridiculous, and my dad said that he was scared of it when he was younger.

Things have come a long way indeed.

Import Export by Ulrich Seidl

austrian film and it was really great. pretty sad and disturbing, but humane too.

also try Hundstage (Dog Days) by Seidl too, which shows bourgeois in suburban Vienna. very dark and disturbing, but in a way you could only see in Vienna.

EDIT: No, it was Ridg3.

Damn good film though. A real star-studded cast.

dunno if i mentioned it before, but i watched the original Flight Of The Phoenix. fucking great film. i couldn't believe James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, Ernest Borgnine, Ian Bannen and George Kennedy were all in the same film.

i also watched Emperor Of The North the other day. i used to love that film as a kid, i still do. Lee Marvin and, again, Ernest Borgnine. he's a fucking great actor, plays the part brilliantly. i wish he played more raving lunatic roles.

I watched Battle LA last night. It was okay. Way too much 'USA! USA!' wankery, but the aliens were pretty neat. The fact that the only time spent on giving them character was basically 'Let's slice up this thing while it makes horrible squelching noises' took away from it.

Saw Rango and Super 8.

Rango was fantastic, one of the best movies in recent memory, animated or not. I didn't really mind how predictable the story was since I loved the way it was presented and the stuff in between. It also felt very western to me. The CG is probably the best I've seen in an animated movie.

Super 8 was pretty rad as well. Though it didn't focus on the monster as much as I expected, was still really fun. Most of the movie is about the kids and how the react to each other and what is going on around them, it's pretty accurate about this and it made me laugh more than I thought I would. Monster was still cool in the scenes it was in though.

This was a while ago but I wrote it down so I didn't forget then I did but then I remembered.

I went to one of my three annual lectures at the Cheltenham Science Festival. It was entitled Intelligence of the Living Cell. The guy speaking, Brian Ford, clearly had an axe to grind - he spent half the time slagging off the BBC for not representing microbiology well enough and refusing to make his TV shows - and he didn't go as in-depth as I would've liked, but he did have a nice little showreel he'd made of single-celled organisms behaving intellegently.

And he used some old E3 footage of Spore to make a point. Will Wright said that "bacteria don't really have eyes, but we put them on to make them look a bit cuter", prompting Brian to go off on another rant, this time about how a lot of microbes do have eyes, do have mouths, do have arms, do have bladders, do chase thei prey. Overall, a good, broad but shallow tour of the wonders of the very small.

Also saw Terry Pratchett: Choosing to Die on BBC Two. Brave, sensitively made and well balanced. Also, OMG Terry Pratchett plays Oblivion!

I also watched Battle LA recently. There's another film based on the same thing that came out around the same time, though it's more towards the B genre.

I also watched Mask for the first time last night. Not Jim Carey and his one liners, the one about the dude with the deformed face.

Wow, I mean...wow. That was amazing.

Skyline was released something like a year before Battle LA, had some legal trouble because it was basically the exact same movie, but more poorly done.

I had a Cronenberg mini-marathon. Re-watching some of the classics.
The Fly, Naked Lunch, eXistenZ, Videodrome.

Fuck. Just fuck. His movies should come with warning label "Warning: May result in vegetarianism"

I also watched John Carpenter's Master's of Horror entry Pro-Life.
It was good cheesy fun. A return to form after his turdfest Ghosts of Mars.

I'm still going to watch it because I know it's going to bad.

It couldn't be any worse than War of the Worlds 2: Second Wave. Fuck, that was the most horrible movie ever shat out by the brain.

Watched The People That Time Forgot, and I myself had forgotten how boring the movie was after the initial pterosaur attack on a bi-plane. There was also a completely wasted cameo from the star of the previous movie. Shame I can't find the first, it had so much more going for it.

That film was sweet. I enjoyed it because of the whole relationship that he builds with the girl. What I didn't understand was the violence in it, the only part which the violence didn't seem like filler was whenever she went batshit insane and tore the bullies several new ones. But yes, a modern vamp film that I enjoyed. Held true to the nature of Vamps as well.

Mac, is you liked Let Me In.. It was a remake of "Let the right one in" dunno if you know this. Sorry if you already do ... But I suggest watching the original. I know I loved it at least.

I'll probably watch the remake at some point too though.
