Forgot to take screenshots, but I just found some weird tunnels too.
I ran across a little hole with a ladder leading down it not far from my lair, hidden behind a tree. I did a little exploring, there's a fairly large network of caves down there. Strangely, there's nothing down there except torches and some cobblestone blocks - if there were any ores they've been cleared out.
I thought it might have been from when people were looking for the gravel beach cave, but nobody seems to recognise it.
