Pokémon Go

What the fuck is this shit? I haven't played Pokémon since I was 8 but now I'm addicted to this thing.

Nate 07-10-2016 10:52 AM

I'm perplexed by the number of my Facebook friends who've never expressed any interest in any version of Pokemon, who are now playing it constantly.

Scrabaniac 07-10-2016 11:17 AM

I'm just waiting for someone to die whilst playing it. It's bound to happen. I've heard people going onto rail tracks and onto private land to catch these stupid things, so it's only a matter of time that something happens, goes viral and probably gets banned. Especially in UK.
I have never in my life been interested in Pokemon, and I never will be.

FennecFyre 07-10-2016 12:28 PM

My sister is having fun with it, and I'm considering getting it myself. Only problem is we're out in the middle of nowhere, so IDK how much I'll be able to do with it.

Havoc 07-10-2016 01:27 PM

I really like the augemented reality part of it. If you're really against Pokemon as a thing, you could give Ingress a try. Basically the same thing, but without the Pokemon catching and battling and stuff. What I like about the Pokemon game though is a bigger sense of accomplishment. Having a collection of powerful critters that you can use to battle at gyms is a little more satisfying than just collecting XP and achievements.

Connell 07-10-2016 04:41 PM

I got it today. It's fun, but my phone can barely handle it. It's the first of it's kind to do this sort of thing, and I feel like there will definitely be lots of imitators in this field. I agree with scrabaniac as well though, I feel like there's lots of risks with this app. Someone found a body whilst they were playing it and that's only been a week. Perhaps it's just English pessimism. ;)

Nonetheless, I haven't played Pokemon in years but this has rekindled my interest, it'll be fun to see how they evolve it. And it's nice to see Nintendo's share prices go up again (as a Wii U owner ;) )

Mr. Bungle 07-10-2016 06:18 PM

Finally downloading it, can't wait to catch some Mons.

This is truly a genius way to get lazy nerds to go outside and get some exercise, myself very included. Hats off, Game Freak.

JayDee 07-11-2016 04:02 PM

I've been playing pokemon GO to an excessive amount since release, though I imagine mine and most people's hype will eventually dwindle until the inevitable Mewtwo/Legendary Bird Events - or however they plan to throw those guys out there.

So many Zubats.

Mac Sirloin 07-12-2016 08:19 AM

I don't understand why I see more adults playing it than kids. I LOVED Pokemon when I was a child but in my opinion, if you're old enough to grow facial hair you have better things to do than associate with Pokemon. Just an opinion, obviously meaningless in the reality of hairy nerds out catching Zubat in the middle of the night by the pier. I should have thrown my cigarettes at them.

Anyway, what's really interesting to me is how it's highlighting how inconsiderate a generation of kids have become. Kids running in the middle of the road, blocking traffic, entering stores just to chase down a squirtle. I guess it's more like a generation of mediocre parents, but jeeze.

Pokemon GO is like communism; it's a fine idea in theory but breaks down immediately with human involvement. The schools will obviously be the first to ban it, inevitably some creepshow is going to wander into a schoolyard to 'catch' a 'jinx'. Currently, the downtown area of my city is being torn up by the roots in order to renovate the piping. Literally half a kilometer of planks and scaffolding surrounding deep, dangerous pits of construction equipment. Inevitably, some little shit is going to clamber over the fence and get trapped or hurt.

I should download it though. Set up one of those attractors or whatever by a tree, and then foster some wasps and hornets in the branches. Welcome to nature, you anemic little shits. Go back inside and get diabetes like a normal kid.

Exactly, the term is "kidult".

This is the park near my house at 11pm. With zero planning or expectation, I bumped into four or five people I know.

Alright, I can accept this is pretty cool. I suppose it really depends on the person rather than the game itself.

Maybe someday it'll be available around here...

Fraki 07-14-2016 01:18 AM

It came out in the UK today but it doesn't support the type of processor my phone has so it just freezes on the splash screen

Is it because you can't speedrun it?

Is it because you can't speedrun it?

You can but it gets you really tired after running for hours on end.

Is it because you can't speedrun it?

No, because itll take a lot more than Pokemon to get me to go outside.

Mr. Bungle 07-20-2016 06:31 AM

Mortal Kombat GO?

1. It's really tough work being an adult. Pokemon Go has been a welcome break to my otherwise non-stop work schedule where the only socialising I do is networking.

2. It gets adults to socialise without alcohol, which is such a rarity in Britain. It's been the event I've been praying for for years; a social activity that can get people out of the house and willing to socialise without getting shit-faced and spending lots of money.

Connell 07-23-2016 04:41 PM

It's undeniably targeted at 20-30 year olds roughly, who all have smartphones ready to go and nostalgia for the original Pokémon games. In the last couple of days I've started to "get" Pokémon go more. It didn't captivate me at first, but I've found myself going out for Pokémon hunts with friends and family and having a great time.

I agree with Fuzzle Guy's point as well. I'm going into my third year of University (in Britain also) so the majority of socialising that I do is getting absolutely shitfaced 4 nights a week. It's nice to do something else. Of course it's not as if Pokémon go is the first ever non-alcohol related hobby, but hey I'm enjoying the ride for now, and so are many of my friends and family.

Fuzzle Guy 07-24-2016 12:03 PM

OWI need to jump on the bandwagon and create a "Free-the-Mudokons GO"

Gunnr 07-24-2016 10:21 PM

Where would we find mudokons? Inside every major business establishment who's product was made by slaves or underpaid, under insured employees working under shady business practices? Local meat processing plants? Or in natural parks or landmarks?

AlexFili 07-30-2016 10:46 AM

I'd love that idea. You'd have churches and factories and they could either be controlled by the Free Mudokons or the Glukkons!

Just play Ingress if you want something like that. Resistance VS Alien invaders basically. I've made a complete 180 since my last post and have gotten heavily into Ingress. Pokemon Go isn't as fun to me anymore since all it seems to be now is a lot of grinding fucking Pidgeys and Ratatas. Gyms are nigh untakeable since everyone now apparently has a level 1000+ Pokemon there, so all the fun has basically been sucked out of it for me.

Ingress on the other hand is a lot of fun, and has a huge social element to it. My city has an entire group chat to coordinate takeovers and attacks and such. You make actual 'enemies' on the streets, become someone's nemesis and all that stuff. If Pokemon Go ever gets that level of competition it could become a very neat game but for the moment it's getting a bit dull.

Hobo 09-01-2016 12:06 PM

Why are grown ups playing an unfun version of pokemon now?

UnderTheSun 09-01-2016 03:03 PM

Looks like there's something big coming.

http://pokemongohub.net/pokemon-budd...em-data-mined/

"Pokemon Buddy System is using the same server side distance calculation as the one used for Pokemon Eggs
  • Walking your Pokemon Buddy will award you with candy. The amount of
  • candy is yet to be determined.
  • You can walk the same Pokemon Buddy multiple times, but there is likely a daily limit for obtained candy
  • You can walk with only one Buddy Pokemon at a time
  • There are various looks of Buddy Pokemon
  • Medium size
  • Big size
  • Flying next to you
  • Rests on your shoulder"

Looks like getting enough candy to evolve a rare Pokémon is about to get easier.

(What would the "Free-the-Mudokons-GO" equivalent be? Riding Elum?)

Vexen 09-01-2016 06:16 PM

Niantic should have copied and pasted Pokemon Red and given it some new features to spice up the appeal.

Connell 10-30-2016 05:53 PM

So glad everyone is still playing this game. Smash hit Nintendo.

Manco 10-31-2016 09:32 AM

They’ll reap the benefits in data mining for market research for like the next ten years so they’ll be good.
