Now Look to Last Year- a choose-your-own-adventure.

-Part 1-

The first thing you taste in your mouth is the humidity of the forest. The first thing you hear is the far-off cry of birds and the sounds of insects chirping. You pick yourself up.

You can't seem to remember who you are, but your environmental powersuit has the name "Corporal Sleggar Law" on the chest tag, so that must be who you are. You look about yourself. The forest stretches out in every direction, the sunlight barely struggling through the leaves of the highest trees. The ground is covered in leafy scrub apart from a set of mysterious-looking square stones that you realize is a path, running through the middle of this clearing.

The path stretches to the North where it goes downhill in-between two trees and into a darker part of the forest, while to the South the path goes for a long, straight line and terminates around a corner.

Your Powersuit, while the vents are open to the atmosphere, seems normal, so you decide to follow one of the paths.

A. :)

Are we just supposed to vote or write as well?

Strike Witch 11-26-2009 11:32 AM

Just vote, or comment to sway others' opinions.

Wings of Fire 11-26-2009 12:42 PM

B for bouncy.

Splat 11-26-2009 01:24 PM

C! East!
(Or south).

Ah, remember that good old round robin of all those years ago?

enchilado 11-26-2009 01:53 PM

A, A, always A.

~and Splat says A too, because he's with stupid. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Enchilado

Splat 11-27-2009 02:31 AM

B - I wanna get over my amnesia and as a super-soldier with a powah suit, I think the deep dark heart of the deep dark woods is a bad place to start. You might meet a gruffalo or something.

enchilado 11-27-2009 02:33 AM

The Gruffalo is one of the best picture books I have ever read.

However, I still want to go with A.

-Part 2-

You begin trudging down into the darker part of the forest. The path slants downward and the trees on either side of you curve inwards, wreathing your path in shadows. As you walk slowly down the stone steps, you begin to notice soft lights ahead in the gloom.

After a few minutes, you arrive at a level area, a narrow stone walkway covered in patches of moss and hemmed in on both sides by thick tree-trunks and gigantic boulders. The glowing lights you saw come from bioluminescent mushrooms and fungi growing on or around the sides. You can see the walkway continuing into the distance, lit by occasional patches of fungi.

You also spy a small metallic object on the ground. Ask you pick it up, your brain reminds you it's a Memory Log. Perhaps you can activate it. However, it might not be prudent to do that here.

--------------------------------------------------

A. Continue along this path.
B. Return to the clearing.
C. Try to open the Memory Log.

----------------------------------------

Pick one option!

Splat 11-27-2009 02:03 PM

C: What's the worst that could happen?

enchilado 11-27-2009 02:16 PM

You could get someone else's memories stuffed into your head and think you're them and you at the same time for the rest of your life.

C.

slig# 5719 11-27-2009 02:48 PM

I was thinking more along the lines of a dark furred, four legged, glowey eyed monster tries to bite your head off :p. But that's just me.

With that in mind, I say get to a safer area before opening it, so...

B.

moxco 11-27-2009 08:12 PM

Hmmmm, A!

used:) 11-27-2009 08:34 PM

A. Maybe you'll find its corresponding Memory Tree or Memory Lumberjack.

Oddey 11-27-2009 10:52 PM

I say B. Probrably safest to open it there.

Strike Witch 11-29-2009 02:35 PM

Some more votes would be nice.

Alf Shall Rise 11-29-2009 04:29 PM

I choose option A.

MeechMunchie 11-30-2009 05:46 AM

A!

-Part 3-

You have been walking down this ancient stone walkway for what your HUD tells you to be an hour. It's 15:45 Local Time, whatever that means. Through the high branches and endless sprawl of plants above you, you can see the faint light of the sun. The walkway has twisted and turn through the depths of this forest, and about partway a trickling stream started to converge with it. By this point only the stone walkway itself and the trees around it were above water.

Finally, you walk down some stone steps as the water rushes off to some deeper river within the forest. You find yourself standing on a stone platform that is partially subsumed by a pile of earth, with stone tiles leading up the pile to an area beyond the trees. Taking a break, you sit down carefully on a rock and decide to run the Memory Log.

You insert the device into a port on your arm. A screen opens on your Helet's HUD:

////////////////////

Priority notice to all personnel.
Seabook Exploration Corps authorizes access to firearms in storage lockers on-board the SEC Starship Caligula. The following individuals are to be detained:

Dr. Sasa Delanqua
Dr. Richard Neara
Dr. Hyang Soo-Lee

Lethal force is authorized. All personnel are encouraged to not inform members of the Military Delegation on-site.

-The Management

//////////////////

You ponder the words. Obviously, you're a member of either the SEC or the Military, your rank suggesting the latter. Amnesia is a mysterious thing.

You save the Log and continue up the path. There, you find the way branches in three directions.

-----------------------------------------------------

A. You can follow the mound's curvature towards a path that leads to large stone arch in the distance.
B. Another stone arch lies across a small stone bridge directly ahead of you.
C. The third route consists of a set of stone stepping-stones across another tributary, then around a large rock where you can see the side of a third stone arch.

------------------------------------------------

enchilado 12-01-2009 01:39 AM

I love bridges. B please.

Splat 12-01-2009 03:35 AM

I'll have to agree with Ench and say B. Something nasty could be lurking just out of sight if you go the other ways.

(Even though he really disappointed me earlier by not saying, "Silly old Splat, doesn't he know? There's no such thing as a gruffalo!")

Wings of Fire 12-01-2009 03:44 AM

C.

And any starship named Caligula does not bode well.

used:) 12-01-2009 05:05 AM

I would say.......C.

And "Neara," "Caligula"?

HMMMM?

Oddey 12-01-2009 06:27 AM

I say B, as the only thing bad about bridges is the trolls that live underneath.

MeechMunchie 12-01-2009 07:38 AM

A!

slig# 5719 12-01-2009 09:13 AM

B.

No turning back eh.
Anyone get the feeling were bein' led like lambs to a kebab shop :p.

enchilado 12-01-2009 02:03 PM

Switch, are you getting this out of a book, did you write a book yourself or are you writing it as you go along?

... it's been several years since I read the Gruffalo. I really don't remember it.

-Part 4-

You carefully walk across the worn stone bridge. Beneath it, you can see the grassy, mossy remains of what you take to be a courtyard, stone tiles evenly spaced below you. At the other side, you find a solid stone platform walled in by high trees and rock. The arch is the only thing on the platform besides you.

The Arch is large and featureless, the only thing you notice is that the stone itself is totally unmarked by moss, and the gap in the arch appears...wavy, as if one was looking into the distance during hot weather.

You're about to reach out with your hand when a massive roar races through the forest behind you. You spin around, catching site of a large air vessel with the letters SEC painted on the side as it screams over the forest. Unfortunately, the speed of your turn and the shock of the vessel as it rockets past causes you to lose your footing and tumble backwards into the archway.

You feel a tingling sensation and then suddenly find yourself...on a beach.

You remove a spray of sand from your suit's faceplate and pull yourself out of the dune, beholding a gently rolling sea lapping the water before your eyes. To your left the beach extends, to your right a series of steps lead up a cliff towards what looks like some sort of modern structure, probably erected by the SEC or the Military. Without anywhere else to go, you climb the steps on the cliff.

After a good ten minutes of struggle, you make your way towards the lonely outpost. The Military's flag is flying from a small pole attached to the spherical building, and you recognize a Military Dropship perched on a platform to the rear of the base.

You take five steps in before running into the first corpse. The soldier is in an environmental suit just like you, his name tag, Private Dias, visible on his chest. His visor is cracked by gunfire, and you can see his face, almost unrecognizable, drowned in a pool of gore. You step over the grisly site, and head over to the door.

A control panel blinks to life and a pleasant electronic voice asks:

"What's the password?"

----------------------------------------

A. Smash it with a steel rod.
B. Press random buttons.
C. Type in your birthdate.
