Type of toxic gas used in AO and AE?

It always strikes me to what kind of gas is used to kill Abe in the 'ender' parts of the industrial levels of AE and in RuptureFarms boardroom in AO when the timer runs out.

I believe that the gas is probably Chlorine, due to the fact that it is poisonous and yellow-green in colour. Also, by the fact that it does not kill Abe instantly, but does kill him in mere seconds.

What do you guys think? :p

erwinraaben55 11-28-2010 12:46 PM

I think they (read: Glukkons) have a factory somewhere, where they (read: Sligs that are being ordered by Glukkons) extract farts from Mudokons, and use that. A single fart doesn't kill you (as long as you don't let it explode), but a whole lot of it does, takes away the air, so you can't breath and suffocate.

Scraby 11-28-2010 12:51 PM

that sounds jucky, choking in your own fart,or lots of others

I agree that farts do contain toxic hydrogen sulfide gas, thus killing Abe if he were exposed to large quantities.

But if Abe couldn't breath (i.e: air taken away), then he would last longer in the gas before he dies. The fact that he is choking shows that the gas is killing him, not the lack of oxygen. However Mudokons may have a tiny lung capacity, which would explain why.

Mr. Bungle 11-28-2010 01:05 PM

If Muds have such a tiny lung capacity, how does he manage to sprint so far for so long without ever stopping to take a breath? That always bothered me.

Good point. In that case, it would be the hydrogen sulfide gas found in farts that kills Abe, assuming erwinraaben55 is correct.

Could it be mustard gas? Or some Oddworldian form of Zyklon B?

It could be mustard gas, yes. But Zyklon B is colourless, and the gas used in Oddworld is yellow-green, so I don't think it is Zyklon B of any kind.

STM 11-29-2010 12:25 AM

Prussic acid? Perhaps it's just some oddworldian alternative and the developers never really thought about what the gas was. Then again, maybe the gas is an allegory? But yuh, maybe prussic acid?

Glukkons may have wanted to add colors for dramatic effect...

The gas has colour so you can see the damn stuff.

Might as well wonder why little numbers appear above Abe's head to tell him how many rocks he's carrying.

MeechMunchie 11-29-2010 03:51 AM

Zyklon B coloured with farts.

enchilado 11-29-2010 04:09 AM

Or it could be y'know Zyklon B coloured with OH HEY WAIT IT'S A GAME, I SHOULD REALLY LEARN TO SPOT THOSE BLIGHTERS SOME TIME

What are you talking about?

Paul 11-29-2010 07:01 AM

I never noticed but does the gas kill the other muds, what about sligs and other things?

It does kill other Mudokons, but not sligs. Sligs either don't need oxygen to live, or wear a gas mask.

Speaking of gasses, what exactly is the laughing gas? Is there type of substance in real life that gives people the "giggles" like that, or is it an OWI creation?

erwinraaben55 11-29-2010 10:51 AM

Why is Abe not affected by the laughing gas?

OMG I KNOW!

Its a game.
Its colored gas that kills you.
DEAL WITH IT.

There is. It is called nitrous oxide (N2O). It would have near enough the same effect on humans as it would on mudokons.

:

He can probably resist the effects.

I'm only doing this thread so that other people (perhaps chemists like myself), could give their opinion on what chemical is used to kill Abe. Just out of interest. No need to be so rude...

It is meant to be a DISCUSSION thread after all, if you're not interested, then don't post on it.

You can't tell, but I wrote that very sarcastically with full force mockery.

I think they clearly referred to the russian-german concentration camps(at least in oddysee).
At that time both used Cianidric acid (also called Prussic acid), though this gas is colorless and without a smell scientists always used to add coulour and bad smell for assurance purposes.

By the way i'm a chemist too so i kind of undersand your meticulous approch Jango.

Ok, sorry, didn't realise. :) Mockery of what? Out of interest.

Nice to see a fellow chemist here. :)

Yeah, AO uses the term 'Zulag', which seems to directly refer to the German 'Stalags' or the Russian 'Gulags', so I guess the glukkons would've used the same sort of gas as they did (prussic acid), and coloured it green.

However, it could still be chlorine, as it was used by the Germans in WWI, and has the distinct yellow-green colour and, of course, is toxic. Perhaps they have the same chloralkali processes in Oddworld as they do in our world.

So, from this discussion so far, it seems as if the gas used is probably coloured prussic acid or might be chlorine. :)
