More drawings and stuff

Thread for my non-Oddworld shit, quite a bit of it I'm afraid.

Obligatory manga/anime warning.

Very nice. I'm digging the landscape drawings. You should keep doing those, and slowly start to add more and more into them. Make them feel endless.

On a side note, it's great to see NOA&L getting so much attention lately.

I feel like the only un-talented git around here. Good job, bravo!

Had to take down the dragon because the commissioner requested I don't share it. Sorry guys.

STM 04-07-2013 08:44 AM

Hmm, do you use Photoshop for these? The style is nice, looks almost traditional at times.

if you did do this traditionally i'm going to feel like a dumb twat

Steamer_KING 04-07-2013 09:28 AM

Yes, PhotoShop, GIMP or Paint tool SAI, they're usually the most used tools. But I've been wrong before and was amazed by some mspaint users, so...ANYTHING'S POSSIBLE AT THIS MOMENT!

Vyrien 04-07-2013 09:39 AM

Thanks STM. I use Paint Tool SAI, I just love its brushes and it doesn't lag up my computer.

Git'Im 04-07-2013 10:55 AM

Holy shit nipple tits! I like the dragon

Vyrien 05-03-2013 09:14 AM

Seriously though, the detail in that Dragoon is amazing.

Splat 05-03-2013 01:39 PM

Man, I wish I hadn't missed the dragon. :(

But what's there is very cool. I really like your landscapes (the industrial one is especially good). The anime shizzle is cool, shows talent. On the other hand, I'm still pants at commenting on art.
Can I commission an exact replica of the picture of the dragon? :p

Vyrien 05-03-2013 01:49 PM

Thanks guys!

I guess it's okay to upload the re-sized version so:

Picture refs I was given:

Speedpaint: An hour and a half

Oddey 05-26-2013 08:40 PM

That's pretty impressive. I sort of like the whole look it has with the strokes still visible.

Slog Bait 05-26-2013 10:19 PM

Vy, every time I go to pos rep you I get that damn "you must spread rep before giving more" message. It happens literally every time, no exaggeration. Stop making posts that are rep worthy. Fuck.

Though, you may want to work on your atmospheric perspective a bit. The objects that should be further away in that speed paint are too crisp and vivid. The objects that should be close to the viewer are hard to make out.

Also, it's supposed to be rising out of the water, right? That doesn't come across so clearly.

Love the creature design.

Vyrien 12-06-2013 02:05 PM

Thanks for all the positive feedback and crits guys.

Sorry for the long period of inactivity, my computer's PSU failed and I was unable to get to the drawings. Mainly just sketches and speedpaints this time.

Slog Bait 12-06-2013 10:59 PM

Hey Vyrien we should totally do an awesome dragon collab sometime

Vyrien 12-07-2013 01:42 AM

Thanks MA!

Shouldn't that be "wyrm"?

Wings of Fire 12-07-2013 08:19 PM

I like the Touhous and the dragons.

Bullet Magnet 12-09-2013 04:35 PM

Your landscapes' perspective is fantastic, and your character designs are great. What I think you need to work on are your poses, which appear stiff and unnatural. I have a good eye for stiff poses because it's all I ever see in my own drawings.

Vyrien 12-10-2013 12:57 AM

Thanks very much WoF.

Thanks BM, I couldn't agree more. Stiff poses are an issue I've struggled with since I began drawing. Do you have any tips on how to improve them?

Slog Bait 12-10-2013 12:59 AM

OH OH I HAVE TIPS I CAN ASSIST WITH THIS

/raises hand

Vyrien 12-10-2013 01:16 AM

ALL TIPS ARE WELCOME

Slog Bait 12-10-2013 01:20 AM

OKAY AWESOME you should totally get on skype right now if you have the chance because this is something I need to talk about in bursts as opposed to all in one go in a wall of text forum post

MeechMunchie 12-10-2013 09:51 AM

The curve on the torch flames is a good start. If you imagine a pose as less of something you move into, rather something between two positions, something you move through, that's a helpful mindset. Limbs curve away from where they're going, fabric and hair swishes and wraps around them, and anything small or light will move with air resistance. If they're holding a long object like a staff, the force of their turn will push the end they're holding forward, so the other end will tilt back.

I'm not going to go over wind as an artistic concept, because you clearly understand that, but it might be helpful to visualise exactly where the air is supposed to be going while you're building up the figure.

I mean, talking about the last Touhou girl, I'm presuming she's just turned around after hearing a noise. There's clearly movement there, but sometimes the way one thing moves is at odds with another; For instance, some of the hat tassels are flying one way while another flies the other way. Sometimes the impression of movement isn't just about adding in more moving details, but eliminating the details that are taking away from the overall direction. There's also the point of centrifuge - when you turn, things bend away from the centre of the turn, regardless of speed. People rarely turn on the exact central axis of their head, though, so don't be afraid to have the front and the back of their hairdo flying in the same general direction if it looks better.

Also, just as an aside, people who are scared or defensive tend to raise objects to protect their body. That stance will then be read by the viewer. It sounds weird, but a picture where the girl has the staff head pointing up is slightly scarier than one where it's pointing down.

I don't know. Sorry if this sounds patronising, sometimes it's hard to tell what someone knows.
