What are you playing right now? VI

New thread. Answer the question.

I recently replayed The Dig. It was a lot better than I remembered, possibly because I knew the puzzles already and had a lot less aimless walking back and forth, trying to work out what to do.

Varrok 01-04-2014 03:15 PM

Damn, it's one of the classics I keep forgetting to play

Job McYossie 01-04-2014 03:19 PM

I've been play civilization with some friends recently. Other than that, I've been busy making a game and haven't been playing as much.

TheOddgamer98 01-05-2014 12:30 AM

Currently i play Some GTA San Andreas Android, Minecraft PS3 and sometime some classic legends like Oddworld, Rayman, Crash etc.

MeechMunchie 01-05-2014 05:23 AM

I'm playing Pokemon Platinum, but for some reason I can't really get into it.

DarkHoodness 01-05-2014 06:14 AM

I picked up The Swapper on the sale the other week, which I enjoyed. Atmospheric 2D platformer (you really do feel like you're almost alone in space), puzzles that had me stumped a few times, and a storyline which made me go "lol whut" and think about it for a day after I finished it. I like how the art assets were handcrafted from junkcraft and claymation, then digitized.

Also bought Spelunky at the same time. Roguelike 2D platformer, reminds me of DOS classics somewhat. Randomly generating levels, hard as nails, get sent back to the start on death - sort of what makes FTL fun for me.

Last week I made it my mission to finish The Last of Us before the end of 2013, since I felt like I should have had it finished months ago (but didn’t because of a save bug taking the wind out of my sails).

I still haven’t finished it but I’m reasonably sure I’m in the closing act of the story. I feel like playing it so far removed from the release date has allowed me to formulate my opinion on the game without getting caught up in any hype, and I think it holds up pretty well.

The game always has you struggling for supplies (most prominently ammo), which forces you to take your time, plan out your approach to encounters and thoroughly search environments. There’s always this feeling of tension when enemies are around, regardless of how well-equipped you are, and I think that really works in the game’s favor since the story is so strongly focused on how bad things have gotten for people after the end of the world. It also makes every encounter feel like a strong challenge, without ever really feeling unfair – and it’s usually accommodating enough that a less skilled player (AKA me) can still scrape through without feeling cheated.

The game does pull some bullshit occasionally – certain enemy types can instantly kill you with no way for you to escape if they get close enough to you, and there are several scripted moments where you are forced into a surprise confrontation, which by all rights, shouldn’t have happened if the game didn’t just spawn some dudes round a corner. But these moments are rare enough and predictable enough that you can usually recover from or avoid them; and if you can’t, the game’s checkpoint system is quite forgiving.

I’ve really enjoyed the story that’s been told so far. I won’t go too much into it to avoid discussing spoilers, but I feel that the writing here is a notch above the standard of most games: the bleak tone is explored quite thoroughly, and I love how the main characters and their interactions with the world and each other change over the course of the game.

Fallout II, again.

Man that game has a rich plot. This is perhaps the fourth time I've played through and it's my most interesting run yet. I had no idea you could be made an NCR ranger...
I'm stuck at the moment though, trying to blast my way out of the Salvatore's casino, which was going great until I hit the gaming floor. Gotta get through about 10 or 11 goons with a shotgun and 55hp.

OANST 01-06-2014 10:30 AM

Left 4 Dead 2, and Pac-Man CE DX. Mainly because I was able to get Stephanie into these games. Pac-Man more than Left 4 Dead 2.

Edit: I've told Steph that if she can beat any of my high scores in Pac-Man I will be her slave for a week. I'm not really in any danger of that. I'm really good at that game. However, she's told me that I'm not allowed to beat any of my current high scores, and if I do, she is going to shove her finger up my ass during sex.

Unfortunately, I believe her.

STM 01-06-2014 10:48 AM

Sounds like you wanna beat your current high score...

Or err...or not.

OANST 01-06-2014 10:57 AM

Yeah......

Job McYossie 01-06-2014 04:45 PM

Well, his signature is "My bowels hurt."...

MA 01-06-2014 07:33 PM

yeah Job's right, should loosen you up a bit.

OANST 01-07-2014 06:00 AM

I make the pathway nice and slick for her.

Steamer_KING 01-07-2014 07:44 AM

Been playing Peace Walker HD. Seems easier than it was back in 2010, but that may be because of the PS3 controller. Has any of you played any versions of it?

Varrok 01-07-2014 08:09 AM

I completed the PS3 version. It was fun

Steamer_KING 01-07-2014 09:50 AM

Yeah, it's a fun game, apart from the loli shit, that isn't actually loli, but it was a fun game. Also, got around to play Metal Gear Rising. I gotta agree with the people, it's stupid fun. Yeah, it's stupid as shit, even for MGS standards, but it's fun as hell, and lately, that's the most I care about a game.

Varrok 01-07-2014 10:31 AM

It gets dumber as you play it.

Steamer_KING 01-07-2014 12:19 PM

Oh, I know.

I started playing Another World for the first time and I was having a lot of fun with it but I haven't played it since I got stuck at this really annoying part. I don't want any help on it either because I want to figure everything out myself. For some reason at the part I'm up to, there's a huge gap before the next checkpoint. I feel like I'm going through shitloads of obstacles and puzzles without the game checkpointing at all.

Aside from that I've also been playing Resident Evil 6 on PC. It's a pretty shit game overall but it's really fun playing Mercenaries on No Mercy mode with the Last Stand skill. It's nearly impossible but it's still pretty fun. Although I wouldn't be interested in it if I was playing alone, honestly.

Varrok 01-09-2014 08:11 PM

AW is one of those games where you can be stuck forever, since some solutions are absurd. Don't be afraid to use a walkthrough if you're stuck for a long time

Alf Shall Rise 01-09-2014 08:35 PM

Yeah that's for sure. Next time I play, I'll see how long I can hold out for before giving in. It's still a pretty cool game though.

Varrok 01-10-2014 03:14 AM

It is awesome. One of the best games I've ever played

Mr. Bungle 01-10-2014 04:47 AM

I finally got a new Gamecube controller so I'm replaying all the Zeldas. Well, at least Majora and Wind Waker.

Also borrowed Ocarina of Time 3DS so my brother could play it on his, and I'll probably get to that soon to. The game looks so damn nice for a hand held.

Crashpunk 01-10-2014 09:27 AM

Ocarina 3DS really improved the game. Not just graphically, it made the game run smoother and more enjoyable.

Going back to the original N64 is nice and all. But for someone who played Twilight Princess before Ocarina. I'm used to the 3D Zelda games being smoother. OoT is not. and nowadays it's really noticeable.

Job McYossie 01-10-2014 04:02 PM

3DS version is really good. They didn't really change much.

Vyrien 01-10-2014 04:04 PM

I loved how they made the iron boots an inventory item, made it so much easier than going into the equip screen every time you needed to change them during the water temple.

AlexFili 01-11-2014 04:49 AM

Hi, after a lot of research and consideration I got a 3DS XL and I've been playing quite a few games. So far I've got Pokemon Y, Mario Kart 7, Resident Evil Mercenaries, Starfox and Street Fighter IV. By registering my 3DS I also got Torchic in Y and a free download of Super Mario 3D Land which was nice. I've been enjoying lots of features like the Streetpass, eShop downloads and online play.

Feel free to add me to your friends list if you'd like! My 3DS Friend Code is 4871-5088-8996.

In other news I got a lot of Steam games in the sales over December. These include: XCom Enemy Unknown, Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, State of Decay, FTL, Braid and The Witcher 2. I also got Sim City 2000 on GOG.

I'm really enjoying FTL so far, it's actually exactly what I was after in a videogame and if this didn't exist I probably would have made it at some point. It's like the best parts of Star Trek, Star Wars and Mass Effect rolled into one. Looking forward to getting more ships and parts.

I think this is going to be an awesome year in general for games ;)

PS Still playing ACIV:Black Flag at the moment which has a great open-world. I feel like I'm a pro at Wolfpack after all the times I've played it!

Job McYossie 01-11-2014 06:52 PM

I just got my brand new computer in today and I want to push it to the limit, someone give me a game that is hardware intensive so I can really see the capabilities of this new computer. Man, still gotta name the computer too. For now, though, I think I might finally get around to playing Planetside 2, now that I have more than 2 GB of ram.

Vyrien 01-12-2014 01:45 AM

Crysis 3, maxed out settings and anti-aliasing. Go.
