Annoyed with OWF core - Don't scare away potential members

Posted 10-28-2009 at 03:57 PM by AlexFili
Wow, so the OWF community has scared away one of my RPG members, Seikyo Jack. I can't believe that the OWF community have become so moronic that they can't even tell the decent new members from the newbs.

Tip: If they join an RPG and they don't sound like a noob... THEY PROBABLY AREN'T!

Apologies. Don't take this the wrong way, "I love you guys like you was my own right?!" -Aslik Quote.

But seriously, you can't treat newbies like dirt. Think about your karma.

Meh. I doubt anyone who drove him off actually goes to the RPG part of the forum.

If he wasn't scared off by that discussion he would have been by some other one. Better to have it happen now instead of when you're right in the middle of your story.

How do you think OWF weeds out the weak from the strong?

RPG forum is ghey lol

No but really, don't masquerade as a forum vigilante because we scared off a player of your little game.

Noobs come and go, and I think it would be mendacious of us not to haze them a bit when they join. There's a level of irreverent assish-ness present on these forums, if someone can't handle it then they're probably going to leave eventually anyway because they feel alienated or bored.

Oh come now. He's got a perfectly valid point and there are times I feel bad about how some of the new young'uns get treated....

...but the reality is that it's all in good fun! They just don't know what's hit them, with all the sudden memes and pictures (thankyou) and crassness apparently directed toward them.

I'm not a vigilante. I am just expressing my personal views. Don't treat people like dirt, unless you want to be treated the same way.

Anyway, let's just learn a lesson from this and move onwards and upwards. So Jack wasn't that great, but the next guy you scare off might have become the next Havoc or Pilot!

If Seikyo Jack treated me like dirt back as opposed to running away, I probably would have had more respect for him.

And stop using that freaking "could have been the next..." argument. Life goes on. And I would kill myself if we had another Havoc.

EDIT: Okay you took them out.

Well there can only be one Pilot. There may, however, be a co-Pilot.

I'm with AlexFili; many members have been acting like absolute shitbags lately. Perhaps it's due to the increasing average age of the forum that results in a generation gap between the older and newer members. Perhaps it's just that everyone has forgotten how idiotic and noobish they were when they first joined.

Yes, it's irritating when someone asks a stupid, obvious question or posts a thread that has already been answered a hundred times. That's when we politely point out their mistake and suggest they improve in the future. What we should not be doing is trolling them, posting huge amounts of spam or joking about how offtopic and crap the forums has become.

If this gets any worse, I'll be forced to actually do my job and start infracting people.

Did you hear that, everybody? Nate will be forced to do his job.
He admits that he hasn't been doing it up until now.

Times have changed. The forums have become a dark dog-eat-dog world of misfits and madmen. It is no longer the utopian oddworld fan base it once was, and we cannot falsely embrace newcomers that walk into our bleak world all starry-eyed and cheery. They must be shunned from the pack, and if they can handle the cruelty of our ways, they will eventually be accepted.

My tongue was quite firmly in cheek. I generally try to moderate with a soft touch, rather than a firm, slapping hand.

BTW, I just read the Killing For Curiosity thread and I think Seikyo Jack was not treated in an unjustifiable manner. But my previous point still stands for other threads and other members.

Karmic thinking is the mark of a fool. Albert Camus will tell you this.

Kind of have to agree with Alex and Nate here guys, sorry.

I mean, I PMed another member earlier on this afternoon and pretty much made a bet on how long he'd stay, but that still doesn't excuse the sheer amount of spam.

I remember when I joined I got the same shit. The difference between me and half the newbies is that I payed attention to the criticisms and acted accordingly. I didn't go into denial or try and start an argument. I just quietly did as I was told. Now I've earned a little respect, I can let a little more of me out. But I agree. We are too mean. If somebody did something wrong and they apologised, we would have forgiven them. Now we're so angry that they don't even bother to try.

Speaking from personal experience in social situations and being unable to just change to suit others due to struggling with it, I don't understand the whole 'you have to fit in or we'll be snide to you!' hierachy. I don't see how someone should have to expect or deserve it if they're not an asshole.

(Probably doesn't make sense but meh)

MA's Avatar
@Zozo: thanks for generalising. i don't know many people that think seriously like that here, to be honest. we have a wide array of members that do a lot of different things and have a lot of different likes and dislikes. members that stay are the ones that can handle a heated debate, or at times a pointless flame war. and if they can't, they always have the sanctuary that is FC.

if you read the Killing For Curiosity thread you'll see that Jack suddenly dropped the debate, which it was, and hammered on about a number of totally irrelevant things. he got sidetracked, realised this, but then continued to engage it.

to be honest i'm sick of hearing about him. he left, big fucking whoop.
