A Public Anniversary Message to Everybody

Ladies, gentlemen, thugs and hooligans, it is now (frighteningly) ten years to the day since I joined this esteemed forum! That’s right; ten years!
Ten years of fun, and joy, and laughter, and rage, and humiliation, and angst. I’ve made friends! I’ve made enemies! I’ve made mild acquaintances! I even got stalked for a short while by Wil! (And you thought I didn't notice!)

So thank you one and all for making these 4427 posts, these 3653 days, and this 2012 rep (ya stingy misers), all that they have been! I’ve posted fiction ranging from good to terrible, I’ve RPGed, I’ve had a long and in-depth discussion about what goes on under that loincloth, I've been made a mod, I've run competitions; I’ve witnessed highs and lows and had a few myself, I’ve shared triumphs, I’ve saved 399 mudokons, I’ve been ombudsman for at least one argument, I’ve been stressed out by n00bs, I argued with Ackril the Vyklig, I tried to be nice to MeechShrykul1029, I got yelled at once or twice by Nate, I tried to have a rational discussion with Havoc and I infracted OANST for committing rape (or something).

So thank you, one and all, friends here and friends past; for better or worse, this noble message board has had a big impact on my life. I’ve grown up with it, stayed up late with it and smuggled it out of the house on a morning before my parents woke up. Some of my best friends are here, and I dislike none of you enough to not wish you well (I think I got the right number of negatives in that sentence – it’s meant to be a good thing).

I love’s all o’ ya like you was my own! So thanks, OWF, and many happy returns.

	Splat has seen the forums evolve from an over-friendly discussion board about Oddworld, to a disease ridden, 30 member discussion board that likes to talk about humans having sex with animals, how much some of us dislike the person who co-founded the game series we're supposed to discuss, and absolutely NO Oddworld. In many ways we're worse than 4Chan. Happy Join-day Splat!

	The most significant thing you can remember about me is being yelled at? I forgot to make one of these blogs when I hit my tenth anniversary. All I can think now is how old we are. That's a third of my life! No other institution in my life has been there for that long.

Don't feel so bad Nate; my most distinctive memory of OANST is him raping Boudica.

When I first joined I hardly left FC, to be perfectly honest. Al the Vykker and Alector were the FC mods, though Alector was not active. Al tried running an FC competition but it died due to lack of judges. I finally ran a successful FC competition just a couple of years ago.

To be honest, what I really remember most is the wisdom of some people. I remember when someone on the forum had fallen out with another forumite and asked my advice. I remember good advice from many, including T-Nex, and even once when OANST gave me a well-deserved talking to.

My most distinct memory of Nate is that image I posted in Wil's birthday thread with that really nice-looking cake. (You just had to ask.)

I love the times when people get it right, deal with noobs sensibly and reinforce my modship - too many people to recall or count but if you've been there, know you're appreciated.

I recall several major forum crashes; I remember once when it was down for about two months, checking it every day and hoping. Then it came back and everyone thought all the threads had been lost because the forum default setting was to only show threads dating back a month.

I joined just after the Exile of Sydney, and I missed the Great Flame War while I was hiding in FC. I remember a witty comment by MS1029 that made me laugh a huge amount - wish he'd managed that more often.
Forum awards, Mod Survivor Island, Work at Rupture Farms, the Wired Debacle (

), bikini for Havoc, Who Wants to Make a Comic, Wars of the Art, Native Poser, The Red Muse, Sergeant Big, Rex Tirano, Dipstikk, SoFrEaKiNoDd, Dryadri, Mac the Janitor, Teal and a whole bunch of other people who deserve to be mentioned if only I remembered their names.

	You should really stop pretending you know about these sorts of things. It makes you look like you're trying way too hard. Hell even I only know of the Flame War by name, nothing about what it entailed. As far as I'm concerned, Spiderman was a mere blip, he came and went within a few months. We've had much more persistent bad members, that is, members who never improved, even marginally.

This blog made me curious about how long I've been a member here as a percent of my life.

I was almost 13 when I first joined. I have currently been a member for almost exactly 4 years or 25% of my life. Naturally at 26 I will have been a member here for half of my life. Being a lazy Sunday morning I decided to graph the percent of my life here as a function of my age:

y = (x - 13)/x *100

Sadly there aren't many interesting features about the graph, but it did let me solve y for some values of x really quickly. Hypothetically speaking, when I'm 50 this place will have been in 74% of my life and when I'm 80 it will be 83.75%.

10 years is a long time to be part of a forum... I've been around since early 2001 since the days of ye olde EzBoards, just the time I've spent here has been sporadic, and my contributions tiny - But the people I've met here have changed my life, and I'm glad to still be here even if I mostly lurk.

I was around to witness the forum split of years gone by (Great Flame War I?) with the Glass Asylum and that - And I even was silly enough to take a side despite not knowing all the details. That ended how things were back in 2002. Bit of a shame, really. But then it would've all stagnated after a short time anyway.

Different, to say the least. Almost like an Oddworld-themed playpen. :P Most of us were finding our feet, and the stuff we talked about was very strange. But it was still a fun thing to be a part of.
