There's a man...

Posted 03-08-2015 at 08:30 AM by Abeguy
He friended me on Facebook I don't know when. Same last name but I don't even know if I've ever met the guy. Every other post is either an overly happy or cringe inducing Jesus meme, or Islamophobic "news" about how terrorists are infiltrating the US, and your typical anti-muslim fear mongering. He is pretty much everything I hate about right-wing Christianity.

He is my gauge. He is a standard of sorts. What for? The kind of people I should avoid, or a constant reminder of the kind of people I don't want to be? Or is he the test of my patience, wearing away little by little until I get sick of the whole idea of Christianity and devote my life to atheism.

Maybe, as a person who was raised believing similarly strong religious beliefs, I want to see the kind of person I would have become had that path been the one for me, where hatred gets twisted and warped until you can say the most heinous shit about a people, and still have a deep down belief that what you're saying is "love", and that any sort of rational argument can be easily thrown asides temptations of a devil, who can do everything he can to seem appealing.

Maybe everything you reject isn't the devil, by virtue of how unappealing you find it, and you are in fact falling trap to very evil you are trying to fight?

In anycase, I keep him friended, and only a few times have I been compelled to click "I don't want to see this". As long as I can scroll passed his schlock, actively disagree and move on with my life, regardless of whatever else is going on, I feel a little bit saner.

I don't think sparking another religion debate is a good idea.

I thought this blog was more controversial. It wasn't really worth removing.

Hmm? Did I miss something? I'm all for a healthy debate. I have nothing against religion, I'm not anti-theist, just anti-fanaticism of any sort.

Nepsotic your opinions haven't been relevant since the 80s, a religious debate would probably kick this place back into life.

That is, if anyone was still religious.

Sorry to pop in, but Please tell me that you guys have seen the video of Stephen Fry when he publicly spoke out against the Catholic Church? (Ok it isn't Christianity but it's religion.) In one other sense of the word it's, perfection. Probably one of the greatest speeches I have ever heard against the church and is all very valid.

Glad someone said it.

People like this make it really hard for me to be open about my religion. Normally I keep quiet about it because people will (and have) immediately hated me for it, despite how well we got along before hand. There is so much Christian culture I just can't stand. Shit get's blown out of proportion by a bunch of assholes all the time and it really angers me.

Hi.

Besides Job I only know one religious person. I think most developed countries have moved on, but as we all know, America is still stuck in the past in more ways than one (that's not a shot at you or anyone in specific, Job. People can believe whatever they like, I'm not fussed).
I don't have anything against religious people, but I do generally despise religion itself.
There's so many twisted morals in the Bible, and christians seem to pick and choose which ones they follow. They'll go on about how being gay is a sin but pay no attention to the fact that they're going to hell for mix and matching fabrics in clothing items.

Obviously I'm referring to the heavy right-wing ones here, but there's just so much hypocrisy in this religion (and most of the others) that it's so difficult to not point out.

So you've gone from a crazy religious bigot to an entitled fuck. I guess it's better than the former.

Oh. I was ironically paraphrasing OddSocks because Catholicism very much is a form of Christianity.

Awkward.

Fair do's about them not representing other denominations, though.

This is the part that pisses me off the most I think.

I know. I was saying that I was glad that someone made the joke about what oddsocks said being wrong. Your sarcasm wasn't lost on me. Am I really that hard to understand?

I apologise if I angered any one on my stupid comment, for my stupidity on my part, as ironically, I was baptised a Catholic. Obviously having no choice as a child to this decision, but regardless, I should of explained myself better. I'm open to the concept of religion as many of them have healthy morals to which to live by. My problems come from being labelled a "bible basher" when I was a child, but more importantly, as my mother is in a same sex marriage, and the fact it's is a sin, is why I mentioned Stephen Frys argument, as my mother is a perfectly upstanding citizen and just because the sin she is apparently committing she wouldn't be aloud into heaven. I think is a little unfair to say the least. I don't mean to offend anyone on here. Sorry if I did job.

Have most developed countries moved on, Nep? From all I hear the majority of developed countries still have a large religious population and, often in response, a religious leadership. Not as out there as the US, sure, but it's still there.

Not to mention the more evolved nations have historically pushed their religious bigotry onto egalitarian, less developed societies. I.e. Hawaii

So you need a book to tell you to be a good person, and you follow it because apparently you'll get a reward, not because you should just be a good person. In most cases these "morals" revolve entirely around the deity itself. For such a massive omnipotent being he sure does get his feelings hurt easily. This is one of my biggest issues with morality in religion.

I don't need an argument about religion. I think we're all in agreement on the kind of people that annoy all of us (hopefully), and while yes, religion played its part in their life as a source of fear-mongering and xenophobia, many more rational religious people exist.

Yes, I was instructed to copy the text from the embed box, but when I preview the message, I get a large empty "gap" if you like, where the windows of the video would be? I've got to be doing something wrong.

Hmm, that's what I tried, as I made a thread about uploading videos the other day, and test posted using that very method. But it didn't work. Perhaps using mu phone would have anything to do with it? Doubtful but, yano. Thankyou by the way.
