Final (Third) Year: Take 2

(Fifth Year at University)

Autumn Semester

APS330 Project: 58
My highest result, a high 2:2. This project involved designing, carrying out and analysing an experiment, which this year was checking out how well different grass species could emerge having had their seeds planted at various depths. We were looking for correlations between burial depth and emergence (only half the species had this) and between seed size and depth-success (there wasn’t any). My submitted report was on time but incomplete.

APS346 Sustainable Agro-Ecosystems: 50
A borderline 2:2 from what I was expecting to be a terrible exam. In reality I found myself with quite a bit to say on the question I answered (“Soils provide the foundations to most ecosystem services upon which humans depend, but are amongst the most abused and undervalued components of agro-ecosystems”. Explain and discuss.), and my final mark reflects this well.

GEO368 Planetary Geoscience: 41
Only just a pass. I thought the exam would be the easiest, but it turned out to be very shit. Then again, my essay (1/3 of the grade) scored just 25, so I must have earnt a surprising 49 in the exam, a very high 3rd.

APS304 Community Ecology: NA (Not Assessed)
I went to one lecture, submitted no essay and didn’t attend the exam. The only surprise is that I wasn’t awarded a zero, so I don’t to manually appeal for NA status (which is the only way you can resit a module in final year). Whether I want to resit this, I don't know, since it turns out I can graduate without passing all modules.

So overall I’m quite pleased. It certainly wouldn’t have shocked me to have failed all four. My overall grade has gone down ever so slightly. Planetary Geoscience is the biggest letdown, but then again even if I’d scored 70, I’d still have an overall low 2:2 going.

EDIT: Thinking about it, I don’t know if a Not Assessed counts as a zero for the overall grade. If it does, then I’ve dropped down to a 3rd. I’ll find out when I speak to my personal tutor tomorrow.

Holy crap your university must be lenient if that's a 2:2. I have a 2:2.

And, sure, that's from my Engineering degree, which I did fairly craply, but still better than that.

In my experience, 40% is the minimum pass and 70~% is the highest anyone can get without completely revolutionising the field with original discoveries made in your coursework.

Might be nation-scale differences involved here, although I can’t speak for other UK institutions. 70%+ is a 1st, and as BM indicates is pretty hard to achieve.

At my uni, 85+ is an High Distinction for subjects
75-85 is a Distinction.
65-75 is a Credit.
50-65 is a Pass.

I'm not entirely sure how it works for overall course Honours.

When I was in the US, 90+ was an A and it was much easier to acheive than an HD is here.
