Old letters.

Posted 06-24-2011 at 12:53 PM by Bullet Magnet
I have just had a sobering evening. My dad showed me some old letters and photographs he had acquired from his... girlfriend's (I suppose) father. They are of his father, and the letters notifying of his death in Germany in the most recent war we had there. The real kick is that it happened on the 19th of April, 1945, two weeks before the end. There were official documents, photos of him and his friends, a handwritten letter from his commanding officer, and from 1950 and 1950 information about and...

This blog, Life before the Dinosaurs, is about... well.

Anyway, it's by a seven-year old kid who dictates it to his mum. And it's brilliant.

Wedding

No one does pomp and splendour like we can. However, it was all an utter waste of time and money. With all the resources, manpower, organisation, clearance and official cooperation, somehow they still completely failed to riff on this:

There's always Harry, I suppose.

The Horror in Jerusalem

Posted 04-22-2011 at 09:05 AM by Bullet Magnet
This weekend we come together to commemorate one of the most important events in recorded history: the First Zombie Uprising of 33 CE.

The exact date is unclear, but we know it occured somtime in the third or fourth decades of the first century CE. A tumultuous weekend for which no two accounts are consistent, a fact that might be forgiven given the events that occurred.

The details are given in Matthew 27, verses 50 through 53

Surgical exsangination

Posted 04-20-2011 at 05:33 AM by Bullet Magnet
I gave blood for the first time last Friday. Always meant to do it, and here was a ridiculously convenient opportunity. So I went.

I was never sqeamish as a child. I remember being freaked out my a wax stature of a man raising the severed head of another man at some history museum in Dover, but I was equally fascinated by it.

Anyway, I was disturbed to notice that I was growing squeamish in my old age, especially concerning damage to blood vessels. And, I suddenly realised,...

The Deep Blue Network.

Posted 03-25-2011 at 09:28 AM by Bullet Magnet
Imagine the chess-playing supercomputer Deep Blue. Now eliminate all of the chess algorithms in order to install your own.

No, scratch that: retain all of the chess playing algorithms, but fragment them throughout its hard drive. Now in between those fragments install the fragments of your own needlessly complicated algorithm. This algorithm will be capable of calculating 1+1. The system is already capable of doing this, indeed, it is necessary for the functioning of the individual...

The categorisation dispute.

With thanks and apologies to Eliezer Yudkowsky.

We've all heard this argument before. The argument is a mistake. Even cognitive scientists sometimes make this mistake, and they should know better.
If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?

Armando: Of course it does! I've heard trees fall before, there was quite a lot of sound. It's not like the world behaves differently when people aren't around to observe it.

There are still heroes in politics.

We all know that the American Rethuglican party has long since abandoned conservatism in favour of outright insanity. Their latest lunatic proposal, an exercise in explicit science denial sponsored by the famously Magog Cartel-esque Koch Industries, The Energy Tax Prevention Act of 2011, bears witness to this neurological decline.

Praise Odin

Updated 03-09-2011 at 06:29 AM by Bullet Magnet
For it is Odin's Day. And by that I mean Wednesday.

This is the abridged version.

According to the Volsung's saga, Odin placed a sword in a tree, from which it could be removed only by the true king.

Enter Sigmund.

Sigmund withdrew the sword from the tree and with it reigned as king for many years, until he fell in battle, the sword shattered.

Years later, and Sigurd son of Sigmund found himself in the unenviable position...
