My housemate is a Spherical Earth skeptic

Posted 02-22-2016 at 02:40 PM by Holy Sock
Not really a Flat Earth-er but she has some serious questions. I think maybe she's into the whole "concave" theory but I don't like to pry too much since she's also my landlord.

Also the moon and the sun are roughly the same distance from the Earth.

Don't be so close minded, Nep. Watch the hours and hours of evidence first.

I'm an Spherical Earth skeptic too!

I firmly believe it's an oblate spheroid.

That's because it IS a Oblate Spheroid. It's actually a very rough shape if you take away the oceans.

Also. Flat earth theories are dumb as fuck.

How can you be a skeptic of something that has so much empirical evidence? That's like being a skeptic of trees or air.

NO CRASH NO, THEY GOT YOU TOO.

That is not what the Earth looks like. That is a 3d map showing gravitational perturbations across the surface of the Earth due to its inconsistent density.

There's a polish flat earth facebook group, which is a closed one, so you need a permission to even see what they posted, and if you say anything that's not 100% accurate to their agenda, you get kicked out

Also, Earth couldn't be spherical, because it'd roll down from the giant turtle's back.

If you had bothered to watch one of these 3 hour long documentaries Nate they address your snarky comment!! UGH. NASA have been pushing the spherical earth theory yet Neil DeGrasse Tyson says it's like a pear. So which is it??? That's only the beginning of this great journey.

But what would they gain? If you honestly have to ask that question you're just being obtuse. I bet you think chemtrails are bogus, too.

Holy Sock's acting is so passionate.

But if you really truly believed it, you'd do the only right thing to do: Delete all the negative comments about your theory or just disable commenting in general.

On an interesting note: ever wonder why we only seem to see one side of the Moon?

It's because the time it takes to rotate around its own axis and the time it takes to orbit around the Earth is roughly the same! About 27 days. They call it tidal locking. Well it's a bit more complicated or perhaps it's WRONG.

Because obviously the Moon is also a disc. Or maybe it isn't - most of these videos are about the Earth and I'm not up to scratch. But why is the whole moon not lit up when both the Sun and Moon are in the sky?

Why can I see New York City from x many miles away when it should be x many metres below the horizon? She did the math. Or I did the maths.

I honestly still believe that people who say they believe in flat earth are just trolling. It's almost the same as religion, but at least religion has the excuse of their belief being conveniently invisible. These fuck sticks actually refute scientific evidence they can see with their own eyes and I honestly have trouble believing people are THIS retarded.

Well, a large part of their theory is based on observation. That what NASA tells us is true doesn't line up with what we can actually observe.

I mean these are 2 or 3 hour long videos about the theory. They have their own answers for probably any argument you could throw at them. They'd probably run rings around you with their convoluted arguments and logical jumps since they've thought about the shape of the Earth way more than any normal person would - since it's accepted scientific fact.

Because New York City is huge. The bigger something is, the further away you need to go for it to completely disappear into the horizon.

The main reason why people believe the flat earth theory, is that the earth does appear to look flat to us. But instead of researching why that is, (and it's very simple why is it) they just jump to conclusions, try and find any ancient sources which backs them up, and become arrogant, paranoid assholes that are so closed minded, you could bring them up into space, see the curvature of the earth and STILL won't believe it.

The Earth looks flat because we are tiny. And the Earth is huge. Yet if you look closely, you can see the planet's curve in every direction. It's more obvious in different places like going up really high in the mountains, or simply going to the coat. The classic example is to watching a ship out to sea.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson is like the most accomplished troll ever. Take everything he says with a pinch of salt.

Crashpunk, while I agree with you, your reasoning isn't very sound there. Saying "go high up and you can see the curvature" is dumb because you straight up can't. You think you can, but it's just an illusion. It's because you see a horizon 360° around you, it makes it appear to curve.

It's impossible to see the curvature of the Earth without being thousands of miles in orbit. Even astronaughts on the ISS can't see it because they are too close. The reason it looks spherical in images is because it's usually taken with a fish eye lens.

When you're ant on something so large (compared to you), of course it's going to look like there is absolutely no curve! Here's a simple experiment for you that proves this. Look out at the masts of a ship while sailing. If you begin to notice the ship disappearing as it travels father, that's because a curvature exists. Even Aristotle, an ancient greek philosopher understood this. Although he did a different experiment with light, stakes, and shadows. Also, more proof it's not flat, eclipses.

Watch this live cam from the ISS for 90 minutes (a full orbit) and then talk to me about this "flat earth" http://m.ustream.tv/channel/live-iss-stream

the Earth is not flat. when the Earth was still forming and was composed of magma and molten rock and shit, why would it choose to form into a disc shape? to me it makes more sense that it would remain roughly spherical.

this dispute over the shape of the Earth is very strange to me. i mean yeah we have comspiracies about the moon landings being faked and our government not telling us about aliens but i thought we had the 'round planet' theory pretty nailed.

also, posting hours and hours of videos on a subject does not give that subject any more credibility. there are hours and hours of videos on the subject of Bigfoot but i still don't believe that shit. it's ridiculous.
