Today I went to a trainee management all day interview. All the other applicants were black and at the icebreaker the two ladies (One of which was the most attractive girl I have ever seen) were paired up together. For the 'Things you have in common' question, one of them said 'Uhhh we both have black hair and uh, we're both black!' and started laughing raucously and I didn't know if it was okay for me to join in..

I didn't get the job by the way. The interviewers said I was outstanding at everything else but my personality wasn't aggressive enough.

This is apparently the be all and end all of hospitality management and everything else is secondary. Never mind my incredibly displayed problem solving skills, ability to function efficiently under pressure and ability to concisely articulate myself to an audience. All of this is pretty much worthless because I deliberately held back in team building exercises and focus on constructively criticizing my louder teammmate's ideas and suggest improvements that were taken on board in order to actually make shit happen rather than speak over them.

Introverts, it seems, cannot manage people.

That string of compliments wasn't narcissism by the way. They were given to me by the interviewers.

The interview was for Hospitality management? I'm studying that at University in September, and have studied it for the past 3 years of College.
When i was interviewed for the supervisor position at a wedding events company 2 years ago i had to prove that i could lead a team of people whilst actually on the job. Each of the applicants took turns helping run an event and the most efficient/effective basically won. In a sense, you do have to be a tiny bit aggressive as it helps motivate a team, but thats not all. If you're a good people person, and i'm guessing you are, thats a bigger factor, because if you can get people on your team to like you and enjoy your company, they will be more likely to be motivated rather than being hollered at.
Introverts can in a sense manage people, it just takes a bit of time to get the grasp of things i guess.. It's confidence more than anything else. I'm sure if you show willingness you will succeed Wish you luck for future interviews

Being an introvert can make managing people difficult. A lot of complaints that you'll get from your employees are going to be completely illogical, and selfish. Explaining the situation to them isn't enough. You literally have to be capable of telling them to shut their fucking mouths, and go back to work, or leave, and you have to be able to do it in a way that they believe you. That being said, I'm an introvert, but I'm the aggressive kind.

I agree, it fucking sucks having to put your foot down and tell people what to do, but sometimes it's the only thing left to do.

Regardless, I'm sorry you didn't get hired!

I'm soft spoken and slow to anger but I'm hardly a shy little wallflower...

My point was that asking people to form a constructive team and work through problems maybe isn't the best way to look for someone you want to take charge of people.

My Boss is so successful in motivating people, literally because he takes the piss out of everyone! He calls my friend 'Pitbull' because she's loud and she's gypsy-rough.. He calls me 'paperclip' and 'Red Cross African Child' Because i'm quite skinny, he calls the other people 'Fags', 'Bellends' 'Cunts' etc etc and it actually works, whilst it's humorous, it's also a politer way of getting people to crack on i guess :P

My boss contributed to me leaving my last job. He pretty much made it his goal to tell me how absolutely shit I was at everything.

My old boss was like that when i worked at Waitrose.. Their policy was to put out 1 cage of goods per half hour.. and in a typical 6 hour shift i was forced to put out 10 Cages, which is impossible.. And when ever i couldn't do it, (which was always) he used to threaten to put me on disciplinaries and suspensions.. So i embarrassed him infront of all his staff and walked out

If your job description revolves around you doing a task you are physically or mentally incapable of doing, then you lack competency in the role. Incompetent is a nasty sounding word, which is why I used the far more neutral incapable.

It's the way you presented the post that bothered me. 'My manager told me to do a job, I couldn't meet my quota so he gives me cautions. I get fed up, show him up in front of everyone and walk out.'

I'm sure there's a much bigger story there, but the way you presented the story, it doesn't sound to be about a bad boss. I'd rather work for the guy who follows up on inefficient workers than the one who calls me a faggot.

You really do have to find a happy medium in management. You cannot show your employees weakness. They will exploit it. But you also have to take the time to understand every situation that comes up. Has the person been trained well enough? Do they have the tools to competently complete their tasks? Is there a way to make their jobs easier, and provide the employee with more money, while also maximizing department profitability?

My departments are extremely profitable, but that's because I streamline every task, making them as simple as possible, while also making it possible for my employees to make a great deal more than I do if they take advantage of how simple I've made their jobs, and put the effort into it. Basically, making your employees know that you have their best interest in mind, and providing clear, attainable opportunities for advancement, and good pay is how I keep a happy work force that hardly ever forces me to be the prick that they all know I'm capable of, and willing to be.

Your boss might want to watch out in case a homosexual person is hired. It doesn't matter how it is intended, that word can be very offensive.

I work in marketing, so what I've done to make my employee's jobs a whole lot simpler is find a way to have prospective customers call us instead of us having to cold call them. It's a large, far reaching marketing plan that has stages planned out over the course of years, not days, but basically I am branding a "character," like Ronald McDonald, but for home improvement services, and I am, very cynically, I might add, selling this character to the Christian community through an array of faux heart felt messages, charitable donations, and project giveaways. I then hand my employees a piece of paper with an extraordinarily effective script that I wrote, and I set them loose on the unsuspecting, well meaning morons who think that because I sell the company as a Christian company that we are somehow more ethical than our competition.

That's how.

Damn. That's seriously some Magog Cartel type shit there (but for the benefit of your employees rather than to their detriment) - if you'll excuse the Oddworld reference.

But cheers, OANST, rather interesting.

While what I do is very cynical, I don't find my approach to be unethical. I'm not in any way providing an inferior project, or taking advantage of people. Well, I am taking advantage of people's tendency to believe that religious organizations are going to take the best care of them. This marketing campaign has worked beyond my wildest dreams, by the way. I typically only work between 20 and 30 hours a week now, making quite a bit more than I used to.

I suppose if you run the business in a way that vaguely follows the scripture, you can't be considered fraudulent. The fact that you're not a believer yourself is neither here nor there.

I know that words can be offensive. He would never single somebody out and pick on them otherwise he wouldn't be where he is today.. It's just work banter, it keeps the place happy and motivated. I really don't care what he calls me because i know i can take a joke. And there are homosexuals working there, and he treats them exactly the same as everyone else, which i guess is a positive thing. Yes he jokes with them about it, and they laugh at it too.. It's not like it is serious at all. In the 5 years he has been manager there, he has not had a single complaint, and no staff have left the business, except for university/college etc. It's good to have a tough skin too, otherwise your susceptible to be hurt even more by showing a weak spot.

Well I was only really making a light reference to the level of manipulation involved, OANST. I don't really think you'd stoop to such satirically depraved levels as the Magog Cartel.

But it sounds like you're doing pretty well for yerself.

Well, let me put it this way, Scrababyac: Your manager is a fucking idiot. All it takes is one disgruntled employee looking for a reason to get the company in trouble, and not only is he going to be out of a job, but the company itself could be on the losing side of a law suit. Let's take his intentions completely out of the conversation for a moment. If he worked for me, I would document what he is doing, and terminate his employment. That's because I'm not stupid.
