Is it creepy?

Posted 10-12-2012 at 05:04 AM by Nate
A while back, I posted in my blog about how some of my students asked me if I spent time on a certain website and I freaked out when I thought they were saying they'd identified me from this place. (Actually, they meant 4chan and only because I had used the word 'weeaboo')

Even longer ago, a then regular member posted about how he had enrolled at my uni and that he would track me down. I then deleted every reference to my name on the forums so he wouldn't be able to.

But then today, a certain member posted something that made me think he goes to my uni. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm reasonably confident.

Is it creepy if I point that out to him? I think yes.

Yes.

And what if he does go there? Does it matter?

I must lack the necessary social awareness, because I can't see the problem. Well all know lots of people in life and on-line, it's not unreasonable that occasionally some of them will overlap from either side.

I had a conversation along those lines with Wil once when he pointed out that we were than living in the same city. I think it culminated in him admitting to being a serial killer.

I understand Nate's worries, though.
God, if people in the real world discovered my online alias I don't know what I would do...

Scream his username at him when you next see him. Top of your lungs. When he turns and looks, point at him with a sharp knife.

If I ever had a chance to see you in real life, I'd shout "Heeeeey Wil!" - Let them know your secret identity!

I keep my two lives entirely separate, the only people that I have brought onto my FB are people who have proven they're relatively trust-able. There's only maybe four or five from this forum.

How did they prove that?

By not making any reference to this place and generally keeping themselves to themselves except for the odd FB chat. Them's good people.

I'm open to all my friends about visiting this place. I even visit it sometimes when I'm with them. Not often, though.

I imagine the situation would be quite different if I were a professor.

Depends if he/she is a rad student or not. If they’re chill and you’re down to hang with them like a cool cat, I say mention it to them.

I'm tempted to delete my blogs just in case anyone tracks me down to here.

I worry what people I know irl would think if they saw me here and I worry what you guys would think if you met me irl. For the most part the gap between my online and "real" personalities has shrunk over the last few years, but I still feel like I'm two different people depending on where you talk to me.

Oh, s/he's not a student of mine. Just a guy/al I've spotted in the corridors.

I'm sure the rest of us feel wonderful to be told we're not trustworthy...

That's not the only reason. I don't really add all that many people any more or get added because what's the point? I have 320 odd 'friends' on FB and I talk to about 10 of them. I think I'll have a purge at some point after I finish year 13 any way.

E: Wise move, Splat. Wise move.

I thought I knew who you were talking about, but they didn't post on the day you made this blog.

Was the old member who was/is going to your uni Taco? I seem to remember something about that.
