I think it is best to say, before anyone lectures you on vanity and shallow behaviour, that we no one wants to be with a munter. Having good looks is generally quite important, that''s why the human race is getting prettier as it evolves. The 'ugly' people are weeded out.

This is why online date sites are fail.

I was going to say "online dating", but that would make me a hypocrite. Sites specifically tailored to match people up are generally a piss-poor way to go about meeting honest suitors. They have very specific criteria to fill out, which gives everyone the opportunity to lie their asses off. I think alot of them are lying more to themselves than to their prospective dates, like putting their weight a few kilos below and promising themselves they'll lose weight before hooking up, adding a few figures to their income because who's going to check that, right?

If you do meet online, I think it's best there be a few months of fairly intimate correspondence before you agree to meet up. This isn't even me being old-fashioned, it's just the smart thing to do.

Sekto: Perhaps, but there aren't many alternatives. I read recently that whilst 20% of the general population are meeting their significant other online (though not necessarily just dating sites), that rises to 60-70% amongst The Gays.

Also, a few months is a bit excessive. A week or so is sufficient to find out whether someone is a good conversationalist, and then that can be transferred to a coffee easily enough.

I think at the very least, you should request to connect via webcam before meeting them in person. A bit demanding I suppose, but considering 60-70% of single gay men are dating online, I can't imagine many of them would have a problem jumping through a few hoops to hook up with someone. This way you can prevent any further nasty surprises.

I think that if I asked that of the typical gay man, he'd assume I was requesting cam sex. Not quite the message I try to project.

The human race is not evolving to be prettier, even if there was an inheritable correlation, since the genes from two attractive people may not create an attractive child, the features may simply not go well together or recessive features may emerge. Similarly, I have seen some real hotties produced by, in a word, trolls.

On a selection basis, attractive individuals are in high demand as partners, and thus have their pick, usually similarly beautiful people (though there are other desirable traits also). The "nines" left get their pick of who is left, and so on. The ugliest people are not going to not breed just because they didn't get the prettiest partners. It is observed that people most often acquire partners of similar levels of attractiveness (by whoever's reckoning), just as it is observed that uglier people are not less reproductively successful.

Fair enough BM, I was only repeating something I had heard once, and didn't ever put much thought into the truthfulness it presented.
