I was hacked...

And I know it was me just being way too care-free and not being suspiscious enough. I really should not have fallen for it but I did.

A friend of mine gave me a link to what was supposedly the Steam community forums. I fell for it. It wasn't and the worst part is that I saw it. I saw it wasn't a .com or a .net, but a .tk which indicates it's a free website. It was my own damn fault I did not realise something was up, but instead I waltzed on into the trap, typed in my password, and the like.

Moments after, my friend logged out and then logged back on. He informed me he had just been hacked, and that anything he had said before wasn't true at all. Then I knew what had happened.

A window saying someone was accessing my account from another computer popped up, confirming my fears.

Now I cannot play my games til I get it back with Steam support's help. I'm more concerned for my friend's accounts though. No doubt some of them will be fooled, and be hacked as well.

I feel stupid and somewhat sad now.

My friend's mum got hacked by those fucking Nigerian's two days ago. They stole £200. Probably went back home and brought a fucking house.

EDIT: Also I hope your account gets repaired soon.

Im sorry to hear... Being hacked is not fun at all. Im lucky enough never to have been hacked ever, but I also do study security, and Ive been playing around with hacking methods in the past, so I know risks.

Specially on IM I always ask the person if it indeed them who sent me a link if they sent me one. You should always do the same too.

I mean I particularly played around with phishing sites, but i don't feel too bad about it, cos I just used it prank horny net geeks with it. At the time I was having fun, but no way am I ever doing that again. It's illegal and I didn't know that then x_x But that experience has made me extra aware cos i found out how easy it was.

man these services really need to have some sort of back-up method for cases such as this. Such as calling a certain number in case your account was hacked, and then no one would be able to use it until the issue was resolved.

Im hoping for the best though x_x

Is there no simple password reset thing?

I once had my Ebay account phished via email. I picked up on it at the point where they were asking me to confirm my identity by typing in my credit card number - despite me never having given it to Ebay in the first place. So they didn't get that, but I had given my username and password. I immediately logged in to the proper Ebay site, changed my password and nothing bad has happened since.

If you notice you've fallen for anything like that try to reset your password ASAP since they may not know your secret question etc.

I did try to reset my password, but just as I was about to, my account was trying to be accessed by the hacker, not letting me finish.

That's kinda crappy. Most websites will email you, telling you that your password has been changed and giving you an option to override it.

Do you know whether you've actually lost anything or if they've used your account to do anything dodgy?

Basically, I believe the hacker either managed to hack another account, or he wanted to use my account to play my games without actually purchasing them.

I've notified most of my friends I have been hacked, so it is unlikely the hacker will be able to screw up relations with friends. Or steal their accounts in the same manner for that matter.
