So... The iPhone 4...

Posted 06-23-2010 at 12:39 PM by Havoc
I'm normally not a big Apple fan. I don't like (out of principle, mostly) how they try to make money on everything (like creating a product you can't take the battery out of, so when you need it replaced you have to go specifically to them) and how they try to bash on their competitors reputation in their commercials instead of trying to uphold their own. The way Apple does business is smart, absolutely, I'm just not a big fan of it.

Non the less Apple products have been becoming a bigger part of my life for the last few months, starting with an iPod Nano for my 13 hour flight to Las Vegas last year. I had gone through a number of MP3 players before that, but I just couldn't find the functionality I wanted in any of them except the iPod. I would have gone for a Touch, but I thought it was too expensive.

Not long after that I got an iMac to replace the cable clutter PC in my living room. Granted, it has Windows 7 running on it but I use OSX from time to time.

Then, for the last 10 weeks I've been working on a school project that required me to edit the video footage on a Mac Pro and Final Cut Pro. I did most of this at school but with time pressure being a bigger problem every week I did more and more at home on my iMac in OSX.

So yeah, lot of Apple things and I thought that would be just about it, but then the bastards introduce the iPhone 4. Fucking HD cam, HD screen, phone, camera and an extremely sexy design all in one. In all honest truth, the iPhone 1 - 3 was just plain ugly and lacked even the most basic features but I have to hand it to Apple, they fixed all that with this new version of the iPhone. And I want it. I hope it gets a bit cheaper between now and the next time I go to Vegas, because I will so buy one if it is. I want one...

Most of the people I encounter who have iPhones are pretty serious gadget users.. I mean, it's a pretty consuming part of their daily lives.

Are you video editing in OS X?

In Final Cut Pro, yes.

How is it, on a mac?

Well I used to edit on Adobe Premiere Pro on Windows but I have to say that working with Final Cut Pro was surprisingly easy. In fact, setting preferences for the program like video quality, format, codecs and all that crap is insanely simpler to do in Final Cut than it is in Premiere Pro.

The editing itself is almost identical, importing clips, organizing them and editing the timeline is pretty much the same in both (if not any) software packages. I guess the only difference is effects and stuff like that. There are some minor differences but I found most things were pretty much where you'd expect them, maybe just under a different label.

As for working on OSX, that's a personal thing I guess. It takes some getting used to coming from Windows but that's just a matter of taking your time with it.

No, that's because they never actually use the features that makes the iPhone unique, they just own it so they can show off the fact that they have an iPhone.

Exactly what makes the previous iPhones unique anyway? If memory serves, there were actually a few things missing like Bluetooth...

I think I missed the original release of the iPhone, because when I first started hearing about them there were tons of smartphones out there, all with much more stuff than an iPhone. The only unique thing it has is the appstore and even that is now being done by more developers than just Apple.

Something seems to remind me of owning a cassette Walkman...

Ah, well... I was just a kid after all.

I still have mine. It's the only thing that has survived countless skate sessions over the years.

Small wonder. Tape decks are simply dependable. I've still got the fullsized neon-orange foam earbud headset with a stainless headband that came with mine.

Still have any tapes?

I still have the original headband but I use different earbuds now since they just make more since for what I use the Walkman for.

I have an original Vanilla Ice Cassette and a couple of mixed tapes that I remix every so often.

Yep, Vanilla Ice is on my list. Mr. Mister, Billy Idol, Erasure are some of the tapes I still have, though I don't really ever listen to the Walkman any more I play the tapes on my big Hi-Fi. God I love it.

LOL, you still make your own mix tapes, awesome.

I feel that I could spend an afternoon in your shop just browsing and asking you questions while listening to the aforementioned music and have a mighty fine time.

Probably so. Also there's a skate shop right next door. If you do ever decide to drop in, I've got the tunes.

I had one of those wide blackberries for a while until the battery blew up. It was a hand-me-down. Dad's a sucker for the latest technology, which is good for me because I always get some pretty decent run-off without having to actually buy anything. I remember some kid at my old school was hounding me for owning an "old phone".
The model couldn't have been more than a year old, Slow the fuck down!

As for the iPhone, all the "trendy" kids seem obligated to have one only to whip it out at the most inappropriate of times to show everyone the latest useless app they downloaded. Also, any phone that I have to spritz with windex on a weekly basis to keep it in working order isn't for me.

Tell him to get you a damn run-off mattress.

Yeah, tell me about it. Unfortunately he doesn't go through mattresses like he does phones and monitors.
